My wife has this problem and was on the contraceptive pill which did solve it until we got married. Now she is just constantly pregnant, so she hasn't had a period in nearly 4 years :D problem solved! well... someday she will have periods again, and I suspect they'll be like they were - incredibly painful. She has been told to take a good multivitamin which will help with her regularity, but I am not sure if it'll help with the pain.

I asked my pastor this question once, because for a while I was experiencing hormone-induced breakouts during my period and my doctor wanted to put me on birth control, which upset me very much. My pastor advised me against it, but also said that the use of birth control has also to do with one's intent - if one intends in any way to inhibit the possibility of conception, then it is grave and morally wrong. Also, if a woman is married and knows full well that the primary use of the pills is to prevent conception even if she is initially using the pills for another reason, that is a barrier between her, her husband, and God, which is also sinful...

(For the record I refused my doctor's insistence on birth control and she gave me a topical treatment which has been just as beneficial.)

I would strongly suggest pursuing other methods of coping with a difficult menstrual cycle. I have suffered from time to time with mine, though not nearly as severely as some of the women here have shared... I have had occasions where I have been doubled over in pain for a few days and have had to miss school, so I can sympathise, but at the same time, since this woman will be married, I would say that she ought not compromise herself morally nor spiritually. One's relationship with God in Christ is of utmost importance and I'm sure she would find much sorrow in seeing it damaged...

THnaks for all the replies guys. Good stuff.. I'll relay the info to her.

I do think it is a bit odd to refer to having a baby as a "solution". The baby is an end in itself. I highly doubt my friend would want to consider childr IN ORDER to avoid horrible periods. lol

Do you take anything for these symptoms?

I try to eat some soy at least once a day and that has helped with the hot flashes. Other than that I just offer it up and have just accepted the fact that I'll be miserable until I hit menapause.

I know but if she wants one she'll get the added benefit of not having cramps if it works for her. Or as Geocajun suggests, tell her to just stay pregnant.:D
