Thread: The Dying Light

Name: Bastian Friel
Race: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 26
Height: 5’9’’
Weight: 178
Occupation: Carpenter

Appearance: There are certain parts about Bastian that are soft and subtle where others are rough. His face has more of the smooth qualities around his eyes, round and a bright blue with lightly colored eyebrows, and a small nose. They’re also incredibly expressive where he usually isn’t any other way. Then his appearance becomes more rugged in sharper features with a thin upper lip and strong jaw. His hair is often disheveled, cut short around his ears and brow in a dirty blonde. While his physique could fit in the category of simple, his hands are quite large and calloused from years of working with them.

Bastian doesn’t wear anything that would be showy and draw attention, or vice versa and cause him to drift into the background. He chooses quaint outfits with neutral colors. Usually a long sleeve shirt, even in summer, though he’s known to roll the sleeves up constantly to where it’s almost a habit; a waistcoat; trousers; and boots…if they’re necessary. Normally he likes to work without them, and will only wear boots if he goes out. There’s also a wooden pocket watch he carries around with him at all times. It looks exactly like a real one, even having a chain that drapes across the front of his waistcoat, except it’s not and doesn’t work. It’s fairly useless aside from just being there. Yet he refuses to go anywhere without it.

Personality: Bastian is a simple, simple man. Unless one attempts to delve into his secret, there’s nothing overly complex about him. He’s kind and takes things in stride, normally smiling even if he’s not in a good mood. He’s quick to apologize if he feels he’s in the wrong, and is always ready to help those who might need him. While he’s not overly quiet, and definitely not shy, one wouldn’t see him socializing as the center of attention. He’s open to talking one-on-one, but as soon as more people become involved, he’ll fade back. Although he doesn’t show it aside from his occupation, he’s a rather creative person, and will run more on emotion than logic. He enjoys working with his hands, and doesn’t mind getting a little dirty in the process, yet he’s good enough at remaining gentle no matter what he does.

Background: Bastian had an average home with an average life, living with his maternal grandparents, two older brothers (Jeadro and Andre), and a younger sister (Frosia) after his mother passed away during a harsh winter when he was a young boy. His father was only involved in his life briefly before he left shortly after the birth of Bastian’s sister. None of the siblings aside from the eldest son had much to say or think regarding their parents, for they had been brought into their lives so quickly and then left just as much. Instead they focused on their grandparents as being their family, clinging to them especially so.

When Bastian was thirteen, some several years after his mother’s passing, the siblings received a shocking surprise. After eleven years of being away, their father had come back to see them. Of course, things didn’t go over well, especially with Jeadro and the grandparents, afraid that he would try to take the children away. Fortunately, he didn’t. Probably never even had the mind to. While he promised to come by more often and build a relationship with them, after just one visit he disappeared yet again. But before he left, he gave each of his children a gift. To Bastian, he gave a wooden pocket watch with a long chain. A rather meaningless gift, but it gave the boy an interest in wood carving.

So, he decided to pursue this newfound interest, and at thirteen he became an apprentice to a middle aged carpenter, Quinn Melone. He moved into the man’s shop, which also had a small home attached to the back, with his wife and his one son, Reese, who was a couple years younger than Bastian. Almost immediately he began to excel in the art of wood carving, sculpting all sorts of items with his hands and various tools, learning the trade, and visiting his own family once in awhile.

But his main focus turned to a newfound ability. He began to notice certain things happening that he would know beforehand, dealing a lot with the change in seasons; day and night; people’s age; and personal information from others, such as how far along a woman might be in her pregnancy, down to the exact hour. Usually nothing grand, and since they were so simple he assumed that maybe he was just observant. Until they became more complex, such as knowing the definite day and time to other events that might have occurred with people that didn’t show outright. Or even sometimes downright frightening, being able to know when a person’s life would come to an end. He began taking much more notice, too hesitant to mention it to anyone. Was something wrong with him? Did it have to do with where he lived?

He struggled to figure out exactly when it started and how it happened, only to trace his findings back to the wooden watch. Until then it had been stuffed in a chest near his bed, more or less ignored, but after this Bastian couldn’t help but hang onto it. In the process, he found out…he was right. As soon as he began carrying the trinket around him, his mental capabilities increased, giving him a knowledge that no other human being could possibly possess. Since then he’s kept it with him at all times, almost unwillingly yet unable to let it go, for although the power could be useful, it was also a vast curse.

But even knowing this, Bastian continued to live his life as best as he could. After several years of learning under Quinn, he began looking after the store himself, and would personally be requested to make specific things for customers. Slowly he was taking over, working closely with Reese. And never did he mention, nor does he ever plan to mention, the power of the wooden watch.
