As a Catholic, we baptize babies because we believe baptism is more then just a symbolic act. We believe baptism actually washes away sin.

We believe everyone is born with Original Sin and baptism removes that.

Acts 2:38-29

"...be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of your sins: and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you, and to your children..."

If you do not feel right in the church your parents bring you up in, and had been baptized in that religion. Can you be baptized in another.

If I have asked in the wrong place I am sorry.

You are free to do whatever you want. Maybe if you tell us some more background of your situation, then we might be able to help you more :)

Chrisitan Forums has this helpful link at the bottom of this page; it might be good for you to read: Be a Christian

At the bottom it says regarding baptism:

If you decided to become a Christian today, welcome to God's family. Now, as a way to grow closer to Him, the Bible tells us to follow up on our commitment.

Get baptized as a public statement of your new faith in Christ.
Tell someone else about your new faith in Christ.
Spend time with God each day. It does not have to be a long period of time. Just develop the daily habit of praying to Him and reading His Word. Ask God to increase your faith and your understanding of the Bible.
Seek fellowship with other Christians. Develop a group of Christian friends to answer your questions and support you.
Find a local church where you can worship God.

If you have trusted Christ as your Savior, being baptized is a way to making that known publically. The other items of advice I hope you will find helpful too.

Dear Catholic Chief Moderator's

Does the act of BAPTISM bestow upon a soul the HOLY SPIRIT?

Many souls are confused by this. It sounds as if the Church has the power to bestow upon souls the HOLY SPIRIT.

In your Bible the First Epistle of Saint John chapter 2 verse 27 says:

" AND AS FOR YOU, LET THE ANOINTING WHICH YOU HAVE RECIEVED FROM HIM, DWELL IN YOU, AND YOU HAVE NO NEED THAT ANYONE TEACH YOU. BUT AS HIS ANOINTING TEACHES YOU CONCERNING ALL THINGS, AND IS TRUE AND IS NO LIE, EVEN AS IT HAS TAUGHT YOU, ABIDE IN HIM. "

Do you think this ANOINTING referred to here is when GOD bestows HIS PRESIOUS GIFT of the HOLY SPIRIT?

Many think the HOLY SPIRIT to be automatic.
If that where so then there would be no need for new teachers. Could this happen as a babe in CHRIST ?

I sure wish Ya'llll would hang around and keep me out of trouble. I don't like points!!! You know like sort of stop the sparks before they become bonfires!!!

Different churches/denominations have different opinions about baptism / re-baptism / etc. I would suggest asking the pastor of whatever church you are thinking about joining to find out what baptism means there. whether they baptise people who were already baptised elsewhere, etc. He should be quite happy to discuss this with you.

I was baptised twice in my life. The first time was in a Baptist church a week after I got saved at the age of 13.

Years later, when I was 22, and had baclslid fairly far from the Lord, I came back to the Lord in a mighty way and got involved in an Apostolic Church who told me that I had to be Baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of Speaking in Tongues and that I had to be baptised in water in Jesus' name (Acts 2:38) in order to be saved. I told them I was already Baptised in a Baptist church, but told me that was no good, as the Baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost and not in Jesus' name (Acts 2:38). So I got dunked again in a small tub of water. But wait! One of my toes stuck out of the water when my head went under. I had to be dunked again! Making sure that everything was submerged this time. So in reality, I was baptised three times.

I've sinced realised that this Apostolic church was in error. I had a zeal, but was eager and ignorant to please God with unnecessary requirements. Not to say I didn't grow in that Church, but I think it was more my desire to seek God in His Word and learning to love god through fellowship with the church memebers there.

I eventually went back to a Baptist church, which required me to be saved and baptised in order to join. I didn't want to get baptised again, so I referred back to my first baptism at the age of 13 when I first got saved.

I think it is up to you whether or not you want to be baptised again. I am of the opinion that it should be the individuals choice after one gets saved and not in infant baptism. And i do not think that Baptism is in any way part of salvation, but a commandment of Jesus to follow Him in baptism as a symbolic testamony to being dying, being buried, and being raised in Christ to new life. We identify with Christ in this way.

This link has really good information about Infant Baptism in the Catholic Church. I am not saying anyone is right or wrong here (in other words, not arguing a point) - just pointing out some facts. Because Catholics believe in original sin (we are born into sin) they have established infant baptism as a means of washing away that sin. It is a sacrament in the church that must be fulfilled, and the parents of a child have an obligation to fulfill it. Their view is that the child is unable to make that decision, so they commit, during the baptismal vows, to bring the child up in a Christian home. Many protestant churches follow this practice, too. This explanation is really very informative. Hope it helps you make your decision.

I was baptized when I was 12 in a baptist church and soon I fell away from God, by God's good grace he brought me back to him 1 year ago. I have been debating if I should get rebaptized because I have a deeper relationship with him now. At the time i was 12 i knew Jesus ws my saviour but now that Im more mature I have a deeper understanding. I struggle with my decsion becasuse i want to make sure Im saved that i didnt fall through some loop hole.

I was baptized in a pentecostal church at the age of 10. However, I left the pentecostal church and went to a Southern Baptist church at 24. I had to be rebaptized in order to join the church. Why? Because the pentecostal church baptized me in the name of Jesus and the baptist church baptizes in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. So I had to be baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Dear Eyes2awardsHeaven

GOD is not a loop hole kind of GOD!!!

Believe me you got the full meal deal the FIRST time you are BAPTISED.

NOW!!!

What you want to shoot for now is to be BAPTISED with the HOLY SPIRIT. ( SAVED, BORN AGAIN )

GOD knows we are weak and have to learn. HE is a KIND and LOVING GOD. HE knows we are going to fail many times after BAPTISM.

BAPTISM CLEANS you of sin before your time. Makes the score board even. Then it is up to us to walk GOD'S PATH that leads to the KINGDOM OF ALMIGHTY GOD.

After you get all the facts ( or at least you think you do ) then it is up to you to decide once and for all if you are going to commit your whole life to GOD and HIS WILL.

Make the right decision and GOD'S GIFT of the HOLY SPIRIT will be your REWARD. AS HE GIVES IT FREELY!!!

THEN WE CAN DANCE AND REMEMBER:
