  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Anyone have any opinions on this band?

Before I was a Christian, these guys were by far my favorite band. But since turning my life over to Christ, I've just found it harder and harder to listen to them, of course due to the nature of their lyrics.

What are your thoughts on them?

I am in the same boat as you otter. I absolutely loved them since I was 11 up until last year (I'm 24) when I turned to Christ. What I particularly liked about them is that Greg Graffin is very intelligent and it shows in his lyrics(he is an assistant professor at Cornel I believe!). Unfortunately, he clearly hasn't come to Christ and on the contrary seems hellbent (pun intended!) to voice this in each successive album he releases. His latest album, "The Empire Strikes First" is absolutely offensive and explcitily targets Christians and Pres. Bush in a conspiracy sort of way.

"Process of Belief" used to be one of my favorite albums (great great melodies) but for obvious reasons it is no longer in my regular rotation!

Yeah, their music is great. And Graffin's lyrics are highly intelligent. However, I'm prone to not listen to them because of the lyrics themselves, even though they are intelligent I just can't condone the message they are attempting to spread.
I guess the best thing we can do is pray for them.
I read an article somewhere (it was actually about MxPx) and while they were on the Warped Tour with Bad Relgion, one of the members of Bad Religion (Greg Hetson) had asked the guys in MxPx to pray for his family. So, that's proof that, at least within the band, there is some hope.
I've often thought about buying and sending a copy of a book called "The Case for Christ" to Greg Graffin and see if he would even bother reading it.

Just follow God's opinion on this one. If you're feeling bad about listening to them then stop. It's one of the liberty things. If it makes you stumble don't do it. Whatever God is telling you do that.

That's basically where I'm at now. I've pretty much decided they're not worth listening to at this point.
