Bad language/jokes

I'm not a fan of it either, but I've gotten so used to hearing it at work, it doesn't bother me per se as much. However, if someone is in public where kids could hear it and starts cursing, then I have an issue with it and I would remind them children are present. Most don't care.

As another poster said, media reflects society (at least in some respects). If you feel better not watching them, don't watch them. I only watch the Big Bang theory tv series wise myself, and certain aspects about it bother me, but I just ignore them.

I was watching AMC earlier and found it amazing that they were deleting most foul language but God's name was taken in vain about four times. This was on a sunday afternoon. How sad. Of course I had the remote and the power to turn it off, which I should have done after the first mention. I believe we get desensitized if we are not careful. Fellowship with believers is essential. Iron sharpens iron!

Yes we can get too blase about many things. But our sword is for battle, not nestling cosily amongst the safety of like minded Christian company.

I personally hate bad language/jokes. It's overused and unpleasant to hear. The thing is, there are some shows/series/etc I like that contain this kind of language, yet I'm still fond of them. Not for the language obviously, but the plot and characters.

What should I do in this case? Stop watching them because of the language? I have a friend that's a good Christian who reads a webcomic that contains a lot of bad language, yet he says it doesn't bother him. How come this bothers me but not him?

I wish there was a way to be able to filter out all of the stuff that bothers me.

I really hate profane language and jokes also. I will also agree that profane language and jokes are also really overused and unpleasant to hear also. I am not much of a TV fan like you but, I do also love to listen somethings (My itunes/the radio.) that ,extremely unfortunatly, contain alot profane langauge sometimes. I really love listening to music only because of the melody, beat, harmony, and etc but, not the profane langauge if it does contain some.

I really do not know what you should do in this situation but, everytime I hear a profane word (Even a single profane word or profane message.) on my itunes, it bothers me so much I have to play another song imediatly (It bothers me that bad...). Before I even became a Christian, I used to be able to listen to profane language/profane messages (Which still really bothered me before I even became a Christian.) on my intunes without it bothering me so much. It would just come into one ear and out the other ear. I really think the reason I can't even listen to music that contains profane langauge/profane messages is because I either developed a better conscience by listening to it and obeying as much as I can, I discipline myself as a Christian, and/or the Holy Spirit is really convicting me even more often ever sence I started to grow closer to God and Jesus Christ. I really do not know but, it could be all three of these factors.

But, here is my advice to you, I strongly suggest that you pray to God about what you should do, read the Holy Bible to give you even more advice, talk to your paster (If you have one.) and to other Christians (Which you have been doing.) to give you even more advice, start listening and obeying your conscience as often as you can (Also remember it is very important not to grieve your conscience.), start disciplining youself as a Christian more often, and start listening and obeying to Holy Spirit as often as you can (Also remember it is very important not to grieve that Holy Spirit.). I also strongly suggest that block/monitor any tv shows/movies have any profane language/messages on them, including the tv shows/movies that you watch that contain these kind of stuff. I also strongly suggest that you find some other tv/movies that are "Clean, moral, Christian, and etc." that you would grow to love also just to make it somewhat easier on you. Also, you can always pray that God will give you the strengh to overcome temptations/tests/trials, help you do what is really right in his eyes and etc. Amen.

As for your friend, he is probably either a "false Christian", a "lukewarm Christian", a "cardinal Christian" or a really great Christian but also backsliding Christian extremely unfortunately (I really hope he is the last one.). No offence. I really did not mean to come across as really judgemental.

Best of wishes and good luck to you and friend! I will be praying for you and friend always! Please feel free to contact me anytime! Amen! Peace!

I'm curious. Where in the Holy Bible does it talk of no swearing? I know it says "thou shalt not use thy Lord's name in vain", but anywhere else? Not justifying it, I'm just stumped.

Eph. 4:29, Lk. 6:45, 1Pete. 3:10, Col. 3:8.

you mention that your friend is a good christian.. what is a good christian..
the truth is. there are only christians and nonchristians.. there are non that are good.., and if you are truly a christian. that is someone that is save and makes Jesus Christ the standard for their life. they will be offended by course language and and kind of immorality..
of course there are many people that just call themselves christian.. only fooling themself.

Really, giving up the show is a judgment call on your part. If you find that it's really having an affect on you, it may be that you should cut back or give it up entirely.

As for why it bothers you, can't answer that one exactly, but I've found that different things bother different people. For me, language isn't really an issue (I love The Larry Sanders Show and it is rife with language), but sex scenes bother me quite a bit. In my case, I know that's linked partially to past issues I've had with pornography (the scenes are a temptation to me) as well as some marital issues I'm having that I prefer not to go into right here. Could it be that something in your past is causing the language to affect you now? Just a thought.

are you for real? how can telling or even listening to bad language jokes not have an effect on you..
let's put it this way.. would Jesus be caught listening to bad language jokes? much less telling them? "doubtful"..
sin is sin.. you cannot just paint it alright for you, and not alright for others.. based on how you feel about it.. remember that we are sinners.. all sin can be alright for any of us.. the more we lean our life toward the secular and away from the spirit. the more all types of sin become alright for the majority, if not all of us.. it is who we are..
let me give you an update..... none of us chose Jesus Christ over the sinful world.. we only turned to Him, because He chose us first.. thats right.. we are of a debased mind set.. we are all about ourselves and the world that we live in.. it is only because of God's grace that we are saved from ourself and the world.. it was never our first choice.. it is now. but, only because He chose us to be separate from the world..
and there is the key word there... "separate"!!!!!!
so if you are not living as though you are separate from the world. it is probably because you are not..
i drive a tractor-trailer for a living.. i will be driving along sometimes a few hours with another driver in another truck.. we are just talking on CB radio.. all of a sudden he says something dirty.. the first time i hear something dirty, i think to myself, "oh dear".. because i feel that i have not given them the impression that i am more than that.. i am not the type of person to listen to that sort of garbage.. the next time i hear filthy talk come out of their mouth. i shut them down.. i tell them that i am better than that and it goes against my faith to listen to that kind of filthy talk..
do you know what kind of answers i get back.. the one that i hear most is, "oh, i am a christian too"... this coming from the one that i just rebuked for telling me such filth.. so i am guessing that you are no better than these so called christians.. don't get me wrong here. i am not slamming you.. we are both the same.. the only reason it does bother me to hear this sort of filth, isn't because i am some kind of holy roller.. i, like you , am a sinner.. it is the lord that lives inside me that makes me hate hearing it..
so i would think that if it is alright with you to tell bad language jokes.. you may wanna take stock of yourself, and just where you really stand as a christian soldier..
i also want to ask you this.. what did God mean when He said, "be holy because I am holy"....
blessings....

How do you feel when people around you cuss on your job?

If you don't mind it then somehting is wrong. I know we can't have everyone become a saint around us...especially if they are heathen but if you are salt they should feel some sort of conviction when they curse around you.

I work for a church.

I am fortunate that I don't have to put up with that in the church where I have worked for the last more-than-a-decade. I put in decades of my market-place time during which it was the opposite -- in churches and other offices -- where cursing would have been an extremely minor problem.

I lost a huge number of jobs because several employers (from a dentist to several pastors) sexually harassed me, so I was the one who either had to quit or get laid off. Therefore, I feel absolutely No Guilt for working where this has not happened in my final years before retirement.

Some misguided souls have tried to make me feel guilty for working for a church with a decent man as pastor, who my boss. Untouched by the common problems of sin in this office, I will not accept their guilt. When I retire this mid-April, I will walk away, handing my office over to a woman I know will not have to put up with the shenanigans I did from other pastors and bosses. She will be completely safe in this office.

Cursing? Dirty jokes? Yes, I put up with this junk, but compared to sexual harassment, they are nothing.

Ask yourself this- you have your family. Wife, husband and children and maybe grand children. Would you open your door and welcome into your home those very same people so they could act and behave and talk the very same way? Inside your home? No? Yes?

Pick one. Because the television is doing the very same thing.

Except with a TV you don't have to smell their body odor, their breath after smoking crack or having a bottle of rancid whiskey. Why don't you bring them into your bedroom while you and your spouse are dressed for bed? You can lay there on the bed, nearly naked, sharing it with the hookers and pimps and meth-heads you watch on TV. Right?

You're doing the same thing with a TV.

Is it ok what happened to the Jews in WW2? Gassing them, burning them alive, in the ovens and gas chambers, beating them and whipping them and raping the wives and daughters and even the husbands....? Hey, why not? It's on TV.

On TV it's right there. You just don't have to smell the rotten corpses, body odor, or the smell of human flesh burning. It's all gonna be ok.

Right?
