  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

hey this is a question on.......

Colossians 3

7You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices

and i just want to home in on the part where it says "rid yourselves of all such things as....... filthy language from your lips" . Now my question is is this passage talk about bad words like perhaps the "f" word or prehaps sexually obsure words , thats just an example.

i think that it is talking about bad language, and that we shouldnt us it, because we have to as our selves what is filthy language well i believe that it is words that society has deemed as bad or filthy like the "s" word . people may still us these words but thay still recognise them as bad.
Any thats what i think but what do u guys think.

"filthy communication" could also be treated as gossip or talk of unpure things, not necessarily the words themselves.
Although the intent of the words is in need of being explored. A curse is not so much the word itself but the intent. I do agree that this Scripture talks of untruth, but it also talks of language that would hurt our quality of witness, when others hear us speak it. The S and F words are all man-made from acronyms of the past, which were not foul when originally spoken. Over the years, their connotations have changed and they are deemed inappropriate language by society. While, the words themselves are not sinful, but the intent behind them can be and the effect these words bring about in the hearers is definitely cause for our banishment of these from our vocabulary. The use of these words hurts our effectiveness as witnesses for God, and thus should be avoided.

God bless,
Dave

"11Command and teach these things. 12Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity."
[1 Timothy 4:11-12]

Do we set an example for fellow Christians when we use foul language? Yes we do! What example do we set? Possibly a bad example?

To echo what Daveleau said about hurting our effectiveness as witnesses of God (in my own words)...

I was re-reading a list I wrote to myself while deeply meditating on God's Will for my life (I tend to write when I'm meditating, it helps me to focus more clearly for some reason). One of the things I wrote to myself was; "I HAVE to learn to still my tongue. Foul language can NEVER be heard coming out of my mouth, lest I cause an unbeliever to doubt the sincerity of my dedication to God."

When I look at it in that light, I realise its not "just a word", like some of my brethren think (not on this forum, but out here in on the other side of the monitor).
