Backmasking - Remember the Hype?

I agree, although I also played "Beyond Belief" tons when it came out. Probably their two best albums.

I loved how much Scripture they packed into their songs. What a great way to get newly-saved teenagers to memorize the Word. I wish today's bands would do the same.

Jimmy Swaggart was very much anti rock music, even Christian rock back when, and I think he still is. My parents had at least one of his albums, and I have wanted to play one of his records backwards. Unfortunately, their record player automatically spinned forward whenever the needle got close to the record. You couldn't play records backwards with it.

Lol, no, you put another reel, with a full role of tape on the other side, and as it recorded, it went thru the heads to the other side. The cool thing about these was, you could record at different speeds, so a friend of mine sang with an old Beatles song, recording it slower, so he sounded like one of the Chipmunks when it was played back. They were fun to play with.

I remember it all too well. A buddy of mine had a reel to reel (and no, I'm not entirely sure what that is....) and could play the music backwards just by putting the reels on in reverse order.

We did all the classic satanic songs, especially, "Stairway to Heaven" and "Another One Bites The Dust".

I never could make out the "message" in Stairway to Heaven, but I always thought the message was pretty clear in the normal direction. Wasn't really sure why the backwards masking was necessary...

Another One Bites the Dust, however, was a different story. Backwards it said: "Decide to smoke marijuana, marijauana, marijuana"...So now I only listen to PRE-Dust Queen records.

The majority of the songs we listened to backwards to hear the message we either couldn't really make out, or could only make it out if we knew what we were supposed to be hearing.

As for the back masking, yes I remember the whole deal and I was taught it in my church

The interesting thing about it is that actual back masking is extremely easy to detect, and if it is backmasking, when you play the tracks backward it easy to hear. There were no backwards tracks laid down on any of those songs, they were simply listening to the forward lyrics in reverse, which isn't back masking.

One of the only secular songs I know that was back masked was on the sound track to Battle field earth, John Travolta back masked tribute messages to L Ron Hubbard on one of the songs.

Anyone recall the backmasking (also called backward masking) hype of the 80's?

I remember going to a conference thing when I was about 7 or 9. They were talking about how bad rock-n-roll was and how even Christian rock was of the devil. They played a song backwards but I didn't hear anything. I remember not caring, as a child. Funny thing is, my parents still have a magnet that's in the shape of a heart and it says "I the Rock".

So, does anyone think that the backmasking actually does anything? I've often wondered about the whole idea of subliminal messages... Are they really effective? If we hear something backwards but don't realize what we heard, can it really have any effect on us?

I can't imagine that it has any effect. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God so if you don't understand, how can it help or hurt?

Actually, THAT would make an interesting thread in and of itself. I bet we'd get as many interpretations of "Stairway to Heaven" as we had people interpreting it.

The SHORT interpretation is it's a commentary on post modernism. The "lady" represents our lust for material things and how it will lead us to hell.
