Yippee! Kiddos go back to school in less than a week. While I've enjoyed our summer, and the extra time with them, I'm gonna be happy for school to resume. They are looking forward to it as well. They miss their friends.

We did a little school shopping but with school starting so early, we figured they'd be able to go with most of the short outfits they have been wearing this summer. But i know alot of folks who go all out school shopping spending hundreds of dollars.

What do you and your family do to prepare for back to school?

We're still ironing the kinks out of First Day traditions: our oldest is starting 2nd grade and our youngest is starting Kindergarten. They are both SO excited: the older because she LOVES school and learning - she wants to be a teacher - and the younger because she's "finally" going to "Big Kid School"!

The older one was happy with all of her old stuff (backpack, lunchbox, etc.) and only wanted a new 1st Day dress. (Actually, that changed when one of our neighbors, whose daughter is 10, gave BOTH girls new backpacks/bookbags...my oldest decided to use her old backpack for an overnight bag and the neighbor's bookbag for school.)

Our youngest needed everything (except for the aforementioned backpack).

Our oldest's Godmother is a friend of ours from church, a single woman who is a born mother, but never had the opportunity. She offered to take BOTH girls "B2S" (as my oldest put it) shopping. It HAD been tradition for her to take my oldest, but she offered to take both (I suspect it's because my oldest had also stated to her that she didn't need anything...yes, she IS that generous). She got our youngest all of the "stuff" a backpack needs (ruler, folders, etc.) & lunchbox, got them both new 1st day dresses, a second dress, school shoes, fall Sunday shoes, new sandals for the oldest and new sneakers for the youngest!

Thing is, they don't start school 'til 9/2.

My wife, who is a teacher, goes back tomorrow and the kids go back Friday. I have greatly enjoyed our time together this summer and will immensely miss them (I work night shift so only see them on the weekend). My oldest is in 8th grade and the youngest is in 4th grade.
We started a new tradition for starting school this year. We had a family meeting, did a devotion and prayed blessings over each child and my wife for the coming year.

We homeschool, so school never stops at our house.

This was Emily's first year...preparing for it was not fun. Shots, physical, paper work, buying school supplies and uniforms (luckily, most of which were actually given to me). She's been in school for 2 weeks now, we're still adjusting to the schedule, but Emily loves it so we're thrilled to be at this new stage in her life.

Our kids go back on the 25th - less than a week away now! Just today we went shopping for school supplies. I was worried that everything would be picked over, but it really wasn't. We got everything we needed at one store. I had a budget of $50 and we came in just under that. We reuse a lot of things from the last school year. We don't really go shopping for school clothes because our kids are blessed to have cousins who like to buy clothes at expensive stores and then get tired of them and cast them off to our kids:). They are well-clothed. I need to save up clothes money so that we can buy new winter gear for later - boots, good mittens and hats, and someone will probably need a new coat. That stuff gets expensive.
