Is it me or has back to school supply list changed? I remember going shopping for back to school stuff with my parents and it was mainly folders, crayons, paper, markers and pencils. But the lists I get from my kids’ school seem rather long. So I thought we could see who has the longest or most expensive lists LOL.
My kids are in elementary and this is what the school request:

6 packages of #2 pincles
12 packages of loose leaf wide rule paper
2 color pocket folders (3 pronged)
1 color pocket folder (3 holes)
Ruler w/standard and metric
1 pair safety scissor
1 package of 24 count crayons (no larger packages)
1 packages markers
2 highlighters
3 large glue sticks
1 two inch, three ring binder with clear plastic front
10 dividers
3 packages of 4x6 index cards, lined
Pencil bag
3 boxes of family size Kleenex
1 large contain of clean up wipes
Two boxes of quart size Zip-lock
Two boxes of gallon size Zip-lock
2 bottles of hand sanitizer
2 reams of white computer paper
4 single subject spiral notebooks
2 composition books
1 large package of paper towels.

Wow, can the child carry all that?

The school request that the supplies be brought to school on open house night, personal items like pencils, crayons, folders can be left in the child’s assigned desk while shared items like hand sanitizer, paper towels etc… are usually put away in the cabinets.

I usually start buying school supplies at the start of summer—I’ll buy one or two items off the list ever week so that I’m not trying to buy it all at once at the end of summer.

I took care of mine in bits throughout the summer but it wasn't bad at all. I think the lists get longer the older the child/higher the grade :D

1 pack (12 count) Mr. Sketch scented markers
2 box (24 count) Crayons
10 glue sticks
2 boxes of Ticonderoga #2 pencils
One container of anti-bacterial wipes
One container of baby wipes
2 pink erasers
1 folder
1 box of band-aids
1 roll of paper towels
2 boxes of kleenex.

The most expensive items were the markers :)

Is that just one child's list? There's no way a kid can go through TWELVE packs of looseleaf! I also don't think it's right for the school to be expecting the parents to buy THREE boxes of tissues, two packs of printer paper, 2 bottles of hand sanitizer, wipes, paper towels, Zip-lock bags, etc. They're taking advantage of you. When I was in elementary school, they just wanted one box of tissues. That list is insane.

(I'm not a parent, so I'm sorry if I'm not supposed to be in here. I just love shopping for school supplies :sorry:)

I know, I was a bit shocked at them requesting 12 packages of lose leaf, and honestly I think that may be typo—and I only bought 4 packages, LOL. This is pretty standard for this school. Most years I do not buy everything on the list and I do have to say that I have never been given any grief from the school for not buying everything on the list. Though, I’m pretty good about sending in things like Zip-lock bags throughout the school year whenever the teacher is running low.

(I’m kind of surprised that pink eraser where not on the list this year. I bought some anyways. I kind of like school shopping too. But then again I'm a dork.)

Those lists can be a bit ridiculous! All that paper! Wow. And scented markers? That's necessary for school now? Guess I'm old fashioned. When I was in school (don't you hate that when people say that?:p) we didn't even have a supply list, we just used common sense. Everybody brought crayons (some had a small box, some had a big box - we dealt with it). Everybody brought some paper, a notebook or 2 and some folders. Everybody had a pair of scissors, some glue, and pencils and pens.

Why on EARTH would a child need zip lock bags?

Doesn't the school provide kleenex? The hand sanitizer I can see, but clean up wipes and kleenex???????

Back in the day when my roommate was teaching school I was surprised that they asked kids to bring boxes of kleenex, one box per kid. But I was even more surprised at the end of the school year when all the boxes had been used.

The cleanup wipes are handy for a quick wipe-off when the kids work on a special project that might get messy, or if they have a snack in the classroom.

Ziplock bags are a teacher's best friend. They use 'em for everything from putting kids lost teeth in to loose school supplies to flash cards to leftover lunch to art supplies.

I'm odd :) I was happy to find the scented markers. I guess it takes me back to my childhood (I got two boxes, one to keep at home and sniff :p ) so I didn't mind it :p

Yeah, I don’t mind them asking for zip-lock bags, I find I use them at home for all sorts of stuff outside of the kitchen.

My daughter’s kindergarten teacher supplied the classroom with scented markers—but never informed the kids that not all markers are scented. After the first week of school my daughter comes home and starts to sniff the markers—which were not scented. LOL

Wow, moonkitty - that is a LONG list!
I only have the one from last year - we won't get the new list until registration, which is still a couple of weeks away, but the old list is:

school box (pencil box)
1 pink eraser
1 pair scissors
48 #2 pencils
2 bottles of glue
4 glue sticks
1 box Kleenex
1 box watercolor paints
1 box markers
1 24-count box of crayons
colored pencils
1 spiral-bound notebooks
1 box band-aids

Not a bad list at all. We also get notes from the teacher during the year to let us know when the classroom is low on things like Kleenex and many parents will send some boxes in.

I can't imagine what a school age child would do with crayons? In Australia crayons tend to be what toddlers and preschoolers might use.

When they get to school age they are usually using coloured pencils and textas (markers) not crayons. Unless your crayons are different to ours. Here they are usually quite thick and made of wax, not something you would choose to do detailed drawings with. We also have oil pastels which sometimes they might use for art they have a much more vibrant colour than crayons, but again are quite thick and hard to do detailed work with.

Also I have never heard of anyone being asked to provide tissues, wipes, ziplock bags etc, well not at my son's school anyway.

My son's list usually has books on it and stationery items, no surprises there. Although they do ask that you try to avoid expensive licensed stationery, just in case those who can't afford to buy the licensed stuff don't get upset over it (he's in grade 1) they even go as far as the kids have to have a school standard backpack (navy with school logo on) so they don't get upset if someone has a "cooler" bag than them.

In one way I like this but yeah - I guess sometimes kids just have to accept that sometimes there are going to be people with bigger and better things than them and that's life.
