  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi school started today. Evidently there area few ladies who are Christians but I would not have guessed. Seems like a lot of them are into Mary Kay, etc. and talk more about that and not spiritual things. Or they talk about their kids. I talk a bit too, but I wonder why some are not more vocal about their faith. I live in AZ and to me that is different than when I lived in NC, where I lived in a neighborhood and /or worked in areas as a temp where sooner or later Christianity/the word came up. Do you find parents of school age children are more ready or more reticent to share their faith?

Is it a Christian school? If not you shouldn't assume all these women are Christians and if they are if it's a big part of their lives or they really like Christmas and Easter.

Since it's just the starting maybe you should get to know these ladies better before you pick heavy topics to discuss because if they arn't Christian, they might feel like your preching(not saying that you are) and then you'll be off on the wrong foot.

I am a younger parent, and I find it difficult at times. My oldest is seven (8 this fall) and a lot of the parents are older. I was involved in my kids' school this past year and not many people shared their faith. The majority of my area is non-church-going catholics. One mom was Baptist who shared her faith very intensely. And another mom who was Wiccan who also shared her faith very intensely. We also have a couple Muslims & JWs who are open. I share my faith outside of a school setting, but not in school because little ears hear everything and it isn't my job to tell these children anything about their faith. For instance, one of the moms (Jehovah's Witness) said quite clearly at the school, that she wasn't going to participate in the Halloween stuff because that's the devil's birthday. Okay, despite the fact the devil doesn't have a birthday and I found that comment unintelligent, children heard that comment and started asking questions. Questions I am sure a lot parents didn't feel they were appropriate at this stage. I have no problems with moms who don't choose to take part in Halloween, but some don't find harm in it, so it isn't their job to say these these in front of young children. So I keep the religious talk quiet at school. I am open about my faith at play dates & birthday parties or any other function like that.

hahah. I dont even have kids yet.

But this comment

"I have no problems with moms who don't choose to take part in Halloween, but some don't find harm in it, so it isn't their job to say these these in front of young children.:"

made me think of my little sister, who is like 7 and preaches to allthe kids at her public school. I don't know why. but she is so cute. haha. She tells everyone who will listen about Jesus.

I have not found that the parents share about their faith in the school setting...at all. My daughter, however, is another story. She was ministering to children as soon as she started kindergarten and was very vocal about why we do not celebrate Halloween. All she's known her whole life, up until entering public school, was what she knows about Jesus and her faith. Can't fault her for that. Hopefully, she'll get some conversations started at home that should be going on anyway! I did use the end of school party to invite kids to VBS. That's a great, innocent way to get people into church. It's all for the sake of kids, so it can't hurt.

It was the first day. Some people don't feel comfortable bringing up religion, especially in a school setting, as soon as you meet them. I think more people, including myself, should be more outspoken about their faith. Give it a few days and get to know these ladies. Perhaps the topic will come up eventually.

I know that being in a brand new place where everything is new and different is very hard. It's not easy to go through these transitions.

But do you think you could back off just a little before you judge these women? :D I mean, yesgterday was the first day of school, and other than the fact that these people have no concept of when a school year should start (just kidding!) I bet there are some nice Christian folks in AZ. Really!

So far your cheif complaint seems to be that they are not like the women in NC. Guess what? They aren't, and they don't have to be. Not to mention, people from one town are not like people in every other town, people from one neighborhood are not like people in every othr neighborhood...

If you think people should be talking about the things of the Lord, why aren't you doing so? Nowhere is it written that you have to let them set the topics of conversation. Perhaps yo have been brought to this community to be sdalt and light. How does the old saying go? "Better to light one candle than to curse the darkness."

We live in a liberal area where seperation of church and state includes school. Our school systems feel kids learn about all or none. Since Wicca is somewhat popular, those parents have fought for the rights to share their beliefs if Christians ones get shared too. This is one reason why I keep my religion out of school. I don't think kindergarten and first grade are appropriate ages to learn about occult. I also get frustrated with the JW kids who preach because my kids have come home with some really misguided thoughts put in her head by them. My heart aches when my kids come home thinking they are going to hell for something completely unbiblical. :(

So keep 'em home till they are stronger.

I am more worried about my two comming home with misguided notions of who killed Kennedy or why we entered WWI, and II but I live in the 'bible belt', so not much chance of any non chirtian stuff comming home.

(I didn't say lock em up, I mean be their filter for a few more years. let them hear the false stuff with you around instead of just a teacher who may or may not believe what you do, but isn't allowed to discuss God anyway)

I homeschooled until last year. I put them in public school because I was in a high risk twin pregnancy. I was glad they went to school because I went into labor prematurely 8 months ago and one was stillborn. The other was very sick, and I almost bled to death during my c/s. We were in the hospital for quite some time. Then my preemie was admitted back in and nearly died in the PICU. We both have some lasting healthy effects, and I don't feel we are in a position to homeschool yet.
