Baby Walkers

Does anyone know where you can buy a baby walker? All I see are the saucer things. I want something that Grace can walk around in.

They were hard to find for me when my kiddo's were younger. The pediatricians and every parent magazine were against them. I finally found one and LOVED it.

Edited to add:
I had one similar to this which I liked b/c it had the brakes so when I didn't want them to walk around but would rather have them stay near me playing I'd use the brakes

I Loved using a walker with my oldest kids, but in this house they don't work/aren't safe. We have carpet in the den, uneven Saltillo tiles in the kitchen and hallways, and a step-down into the dining area.

We got this bouncer for Abel http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=7732701 and he Loves it!

GM, I think that car one has brakes too that is one thing I wanted. And why are they suppose to be bad for babies? I see it as helping them to walk.

Jgonz, I like that bouncer! I think my sil is getting her one for Christmas. We have hard wood floors so a walker would be perfect.

llghoney, basically they do hold bub in place as they walk but it's not the correct positioning for walking. They are on their tippie toes, with their weight being held on their bum. So they really don't 'help' the baby walk. I hope I explained that correctly. I really dislike them, but we sell heaps of them at the baby shop i work at.

Ahh yeah I can see that. My mom said that we use to love them & go all over the place in our walkers. I dunno I think it may be something to put Grace in for fun.

They don't really aide in walking. My kiddo's just enjoyed being mobile with out me holding them I don't know...both kiddo's were in the walker at about 4 months old and loved it
Also, they used to be (not sure if they still are) unsafe b/c the baby could tip over something and fall...like down stairs
The one I had worked on carpet b/c the wheels were bigger. But we had Berber carpet so it wasn't too long

Basically they are said to be unsafe because they can and will tip if they are used on an uneven surface. I have seen walkers tip over by simply crossing from one room to another where there is a TINY bump in the floor. Also they don't really teach the baby to walk because of the way baby's weight is distributed and that the baby's feet are never really flat on the floor. Another issue is when baby bumps into something items may fall on the baby I have even heard of shelves falling on the baby after the baby bumps into them.

I personally think they are ok if used under complete supervision and used only in flat open areas. Honestly I think they are a better choice than the Johnny Jump Ups that used to be so popular.

Completely off topic, but my dad recommended that we run a couple of screws through the bookshelves and any furniture like it that a child may pull over when trying to pull up on or climb. I honestly never thought of that, but it's a good idea.

I really like the Baby Einstein Musical Motion Jumper You get all of the benefits of the jumper/saucer without worrying about tipover/breaking from doorframes etc. Many people who like the jumperoo don't like this one, but I found it really sturdy (a few said the buttons were hard to push and my 4 month old can do it, so maybe they fixed the problem.?.)

We have stairs and weird floor transitions so I would worry about having a tipover in a walker.

They are illegal in Canada because of how dangerous they can be. My son's doctor is against them and baby carriers that put the babe's weight unnaturally on their hips before it should be.

Not only that but they can flip the thing over, knock things down on themselves, roll down the stairs etc

DS has a Fisher Price car that he can push to help him walk and then it turns into a sitting car he pushes with his feet. He's loved it since he got it. He could use it for support like cruising along the furniture.

Andrew loved his, we never had problems until he learned to crawl over the side and escape! By then we figured it was time for him to learn how to walk anyway, he was about 10-11 months old. He learned to walk just fine at 12 1/2 months old and now at 17 months he dances and runs all over the place! lol

Actully every baby I've seen use a walker didn't walk at a younger age, I've actully seen many tip over.
