  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

When you analyze it, it pretty much boils down to three categories.

Pride (Lovers of Self, Proud, Arrogant, Swollen with Conceit)
Irresponsibility (Lovers of Money, Disobedient to Parents, Ungrateful, Unholy, Without Self Control, Reckless, Lovers of Pleasure)
Lack of Empathy (Abusive, Heartless, Unappeasable, Slanderous, Brutal, Not Loving Good, Treacherous)

I would say these are the main pillars of narcissism. One way to look at this passage is to see it as a classical description of such a personality disorder. Timothy also goes on to say...

They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.

Narcissists tend to be very appealing to women (at first) for the extreme amounts of confidence and charisma they have. Narcissists can be very educated and intelligent but lack godly wisdom and morals. I personally believe that a narcissist by nature cannot be truly saved because it would require admitting fault, which is something a narcissist will never do.

The Bible and many modern psychologists will say avoid a narcissist at all costs. They will not change and they will only hurt you.

Trump is the perfect example of a narcissist.

It sounds like we need some social distancing. How convenient. I wonder, how does one show the love of Christ to the members of that list? What does "avoid such people" mean? Have no contact with them? Don't talk to them? Don't be best friends with them? Don't feed if hungry? Don't have mercy on them in times of need? "Avoid such people" has such a (possibly) wide application. Just throwing that passage out there as if it is self-explaining is hardly helpful. What does it mean in the warp and woof of everyday living? I wonder.

Hello. Thanks for asking.

Yes, show the love of Christ, talk to them, be friendly, feed if hungry, have mercy in times of need; but "avoid" getting into very long talks and spending too much of time on them. It would become foolishness at a certain point. You know it would be unnecessary and unfruitful. I wouldn't keep on entertaining them and let them mock me, steal my time, effort, joy and peace. I will not let the devil/evil doer have what it wants of me. And yes, in some cases, there will also come a point where I would have no other choice but to cut contact with them, not talk to them, not be friends with them, don't feed or have mercy on them; but leave them to their own ways.

It will be hard if not impossible to find one that is not struggling with a few things listed above.

If we think we've got it all down.
We probably don't.

I guess it depends on the situation and to what extent the other person exhibits one or more of those characteristics. As you say, there comes a point where it's foolish to engage.

Trump is not nice! You don't have to remove "the plank" to see what is obvious.
Of course he is not nice, but you fail to see who is actually not nice to. Countries that want to walk all over the US, reporters wanting to push a false agenda during his press conferences, etc...

He is not nice to anyone, except perhaps his own immediate family and sycophants. He is not nice to our NATO allies, the WHO, reporters who actually question him (excluding his propaganda network, Fox of course).

He is a cult leader, a bully, and a liar who is dangerous to the US and to the world. He is a disgrace to the Presidency. If you don't believe what I say then try taking some hydroxychloroquine; maybe you'll live and maybe you won't. Either way, Trump will personally profit.

Seems you have missed the point of his campaign when he was running for president and what he is actually doing to make good on those promises.

He put our allies and our enemies on notice that we won't be walked on anymore. He let our allies know that we won't just foot the bill every time they need help. We will not just show up to fight without some sort of consideration. It might sound mercenary to some people, but why should we constantly end up holding the short end of the stick?

Are you joking?? He has alienated countries with whom we have been a trusted ally from WWII, including NATO, as well as international aid agencies such as the WHO. He is THE laughingstock of the Western world. He has pulled out of the Climate Accord, and while nobody was watching, got through egregious actions to eliminate need environmental controls. He has lied THOUSANDS OF TIMES!!

Before Trump we were the world leader in many categories, including being the exemplar of democracy. He cheated his way into the presidency: "Russia, if you're listening..." He is Putin's shill.

Give me a break. Trump's predecessor made us a doormat to the world. He finally stood up for us and got us out of agreements we never should have been in the first place, including the idiotic climate accord. NATO is a joke, the WHO is just as corrupt as the CDC and the FDA and needs to be held accountable for what they pulled during the current "pandemic." The supposed "needed environmental controls" you seem to be so fond of did more harm than good.

That being said, I am not a complete supporter of his, especially as an individual, but he is who we needed in the White House after the spineless coward we had in there before.

And President Obama's race has nothing to do with it, right?

None. Ben Carson would have made a great president.

Certainly! He is a physician who prior to his appointment had ZERO experience managing a large corporation or government entity. Just the right person to head a Federal Government agency. Not! He's a sycophant, just the kind of person Trump would appoint.

... Carson attempted to stab a schoolmate, but luckily the boy's belt buckle blocked the knife. After praying for three hours, Carson "came to an understanding that to lash out at people is not a sign of strength, it was a sign of weakness." [Too bad Trump never had such an epiphany]

Known for offering provocative commentary on a wide range of issues, including comparing the modern American government to Nazi Germany in a March 2014 interview with Breitbart, and at the 2013 Values Voters Summit, saying that Obamacare is "the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery."
