Automatic Writing

How many of you have done or do automatic writing? Automatic writing is basically just writing anything that comes into your head down on a piece of paper, if your thought train changes you stop mid-word and go on to the next thought.

I did it for a while but I got so scared that I stopped, plus I think FAR faster than I write so Id get maybe two or three letters down then have to switch

I hate automatic writng, I'm a manual guy.

And where esle would your thoughts come from besides your head

I believe automatic writng has nothing to do with your own thoughts.
Auto writing is where you reliquish control of your whole body and some form of energy takes over, you have no recollection of thoughts in your head relating to what is being written.

does giving you a topic and writing anything about it that comes to mind counts as automatic writing?

stream of conscious is usually what it's called and it's usually telling a story though not very clearly. faulkner does it a lot in his writings. as i lay dying is one example. that style of writing isn't really my thing. it can get a little too private for my liking. i prefer to hide my thoughts and feelings in a lot of fluff and prose.

To be truely automatic, it has to be done fast and as far as possible without conscious control. Some of the surrealists did it on mescaline or under hypnosis, for instance.

ah, no wonder i've never studied it. sounds kinda freaky.

Those are scary thoughts! What kind of stuff do you write that way?

Whatever enters your mind, its supposed to give some kind of indication as to your subconscience. Its somewhat like a child psychologist asking a child to draw a picture, small details in the picture (A child drawn without hands could indicate a sense of feeling disconected) give away clues to the child's state of mind. With automatic writing, its a little more direct.

It can be kinda scary because your subconscience is most things you try not to let people see so it can be kinda raw sometimes.
