Interesting thread..there seem to be all kinds of authority, and I still haven't got it figured out yet, not really.
I think that , technically, through Jesus, we have a whole lot more authority than we usually know. I'm wondering if, on one level, God may use us on occasion to exercise that authority in ways we normally wouldn't think of, just because we're available and willing to hear and obey at that moment - but on another level, there is the authority which God normally has given us to move in (for example, if one is a pastor, an exorcist, evangelist...even a tea-maker) - but on another level, perhaps we can 'make use of' (sorry probably wrong way to put it, but I'm thinking fast) as we get to know, trust and obey God.
Sorry if that doesn't make much sense, but as I say, the whole question of authority I find difficult..whether one is a believer or not. For example, there is secular govenmental authority, teachers authority, parents authority, doctors authority, spiritual authority etc etc - and of course, if one is Christian, or even a Satanist, I dare say..there is spiritual authority. Seems like there's quite a lot of different facets...though ultimately, obviously, all true authority comes from God.

Let me speak/type 'out loud.' Not sure where this is going yet, hehe.

Rom. 13:1, There is not authority except from God. and Col 1:16, God created all authorities.
Jesus gave his disciples authority, sot as well as showing Jesus divinity, the disciples are given back a part of what was lost in the fall, or at least if it wasn't lost, then man's authority on Earth is re-asserted (cf. Gen 1:28).

Jesus taught a new teaching, which he did so with authority, Mark 1:27.
The Lord gave the apostles authority to build people up or bring people down (2 Cor. 10:8; 13:10). This to me seems to be in teaching, so it would seem that (in at least one aspect) the authority given to Christians is that authority to teach about Jesus. Jesus called the apostles, and he calls all of us (be that to ordained ministry or to Christianity as a lay-man),
so we too are given authority by Jesus to some degree to teach about him, and to build people up or bring them down. As would naturally follow, all Christians are therefore given great responsibility on behalf of Christ. This itself reminds me of Luke 10 when Jesus sends the 70 out in front of him. The first impression the people have of Jesus comes through those sent by Jesus on his behalf, they too had great authority and responsibility given by Jesus.[/quote]

I think this may be part of what is meant in the verse you give from Luke 10, about authority to trample on snakes etc... which comes on the joyful return of the 70. There is re-assertion of the authority given in Genesis about dominion over God's creation, and as such, great responsibility with that, although I don't think this re-assertion is the thrust of the verse, just an extra way of reading into it. I think the mention of the snakes etc... is a reference (easily understood by the 1st Century jews) to the OT, Deut 8:15, gives the impression of Jesus (again asserting his divinity) protecting his followers as He protected his people in the Exodus, as hard as things are, Jesus is there givin us protection and continually giving us authority over the rest of creation. Psalm 91:11-13, gives the idea that even with God's authority imparted through us, we are watched over and in the shelter of the Most High. With the authority to teach of Jesus and proclaim that he can forgive sin, this isn't always an easy task, but God is continually watching over us with care.

I don't know, it was just me typing what came into my head a the moment (some of the later stuff I'd delved into books, I don't retain that much info at once ). Not sure if it was lost in the fall, or if humans lost sight of the authority given to them and it needed re-asserting or if this is just a red-herring and I'm reading too far into it. I'll let others decide, I was just throwing that one out there as a possibility.

Well we fell under a curse and the only recourse was for Jesus to hang on the tree and "reverse that curse" We had to be redeemed from...Purchased back
from (trying not to be so cavalier about this yet I want to say it succinctly)
See because even though Jesus was perfect.. NEVER sinned ... He was able to
cheat the devil because it's written "Cursed is every man who hangs from the tree" Here's a thread about it for anyone who's interested in understanding this better.

Now this next part is the part not many talk about
and will argue .. but here it is for discussion
Here's WHY He redeemed us:

13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us,
for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."[f]
14He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus,
so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

Now, you have the blessing of Abraham (what's that?) but you have to know it,
believe it and receive it,... just like anything else in the kingdom ...
We have to "take hold" of things
And the devil don't want you to know who you are and so he tries to trick us
with silly religious stuff... So we keep trying to 'be' when we already 'are'
through Christ!

It's funny that some Christians don't believe in the intercession of the saints yet believe exorcists can exorcise people. It's like they're dividing God's power and using sola scriptura to back it up.

Just to clarify, it isn't that we don't believe in the intercession of the saints, it's that we believe in obeying the God's command not to pray to the dead.

They dont preach themselves either

2Cr 4:5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake.

And they didnt preach being lords over folks

1Peter 5:3 Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.

Like Diotrephes he loved to be first, acting like a lord over, exercising authority upon them all that stuff.

These are very helpful passages that give us a lot of insight into the
