  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

That anyone could suggest that Australia is 'a full blown police state' might be the most risible comment I'll read this week. But maybe you could explain the connection between our gun laws, which the overwhelming proportion of Australians support, and what you claim is a police state.

'45% think Australia’s gun laws are not strong enough and 40% think they are about right. Only 6% think they are too strong.' Gun laws - The Essential Report
My explanation is that a lot of people over there aren't real intelligent.

I'd like to see how you made the connection between gun laws which everyone supports and what you term to be a police state. l'm certain that you can't but I'll keep asking until everyone realises that.

So your explanation is..?

I'm still waiting for the connection between gun controls and a 'police state'. I'm not interested in what you think the results were. I want to see you make the connection.

Whenever you're ready...

After losing their gun rights, it took Australia only a couple years to become a full blown police state. And people wonder why Americans don't want excessive gun laws.

This would have to be one of the more ridiculous statements I've seen on CF - and I've seen a lot of ridiculous.

Australians are culturally very different to Americans.

In Australia, gun ownership is not seen as a "basic human right".

And now the freedom of the Press clearly isn't seen as one either.
How much further is Australia ready to go?

I'm not sure.

Canberra will be hosting the biennial Flower Show and Book Burning ceremony next month. That's followed by the annual Melbourne Thought Police Parade accompanied by an assortment of recalcitrant reporters stripped naked and whipped through the streets.

I think we're getting there.

Are tickets still available for the book burning?

Absolutely,

By the way - it's BYO book. I'm taking my entire collection of prissy Jane Austen novels.

I bought a few copies of 'Tony Abbott - The Defining Speeches' a few months back in a garage sale for a dollar. I use about 2 or 3 speeches each time I fire up the pizza oven. I'm going to take those down. They burn really well.

Maybe reporters should disguise themselves as protesters in order to have the "proper credentials" to enter the protest area. ;)
There was strangely little reporting on the January 6 incident from the perspective of protesters who went but didn't participate in the rioting. One I read of, was very interesting about those who were urging the rioters on, and attempting to cause a mob event.

So I'm guessing if reporters went disguised as protesters, their reports would be treated with indifference at best.

Too bad. I bet it is in the outback though.
Why not? You've been wrong with everything else you've thought about Australia so far, according to Australians. No sense in breaking that streak now....

Yet Australia ranks higher than the U.S. on various freedom indices:

Economic Freedom Index (Australia #3, US #20): Country Rankings: World & Global Economy Rankings on Economic Freedom
Human Freedom Index (Australia#5, US #17): https://www.cato.org/human-freedom-index/2020
World Press Freedom Index (Australia #25, US #44): World press freedom index

Methinks the claims of them being a police state may be a little overblown (especially since it's not like police in the U.S. haven't done share of overbearing enforcement).

You and I both knew you didn't have an answer. Now everyone else does as well.
