OK, I'm reading a book that takes place in and was written in Australia. They keep talking about eating something something called Vegemite. I can't say I've ever heard of his before. Just out of curiousity... what is it? Is it really a food (I'm guessing it's a food, not a drink...) that you eat a lot, or is it more of a stereotype?

Yes Shine...we all love out vegemite. It's a yeast extract and used on toast, bread, as sandwiched, in stews and casseroles, and many toddlers have it made into soup with bread crumbled into it. We have many ways of eating vegemite, and it's used sparingly due to it's saltiness. Children actually do grow up on their vegemite!

That is so good!!
I wish they sold it here in the states.

A friend of mine said it tasted like axle grease smells.
I loved it though.
As far as I know we can't get it here in the states.
It is made by Kraft don't know what is so hard to have it in the states!

Actually, I think you can buy it online now Evee. And, I think they now make it in a tube.
But, it must be a acquired taste for overseas folk. Nooo...it doesn't smell like axle grease,
Just had a smell of mine...it seems to have a cheesy/ salty smell to me. But it is very nice!
Yes, Kraft make it but I think they bought it out. American's aren't used to it like Aussies are. It's sort of traditional to have it in the cupboard in Australia.
We make different kinds of sangers with it...like...for example;
bread & butter, a bit of vegemite, cheese, tomato, lettuce...and top with bread & butter. (Sandwich)
Vegemite is very, very healthy for you.

Aunty Bev I have to side with Evee's friend on this one, especially after my "Vegemite Rocks" incident the other day... I really can't stand the stuff - I must be the only Aussie who isn't a fan! I was once told that Vegemite was like Nutella and you had to spread it thickly - needless to say, that person soon got a shellacking from me!

- so on that last point, you Yankees, don't spread it too thick, or you'll really hate it! You don't need much to get flavour out of it!

I think undoubtedly the best way to have vegimite, is you spread some margarine on two vita-wheats (rye crackers that have little holes in them), spread ALOT of vegimite on ontop of the margarin on one of the biscuits (yes alot, you guys are wimps, 5mm is the standard thickness for me :) ), then put the two together, and squeeze...because of the holes which the vitawheats have there will be little vegimite worms comming out, which are possibly one of the nicest things in the world....lol, someone really cruel once told an american that it was cockroach spread...:p

It is so yummy.
I like it spread thin on toast.
It smells like yeast in bread to me but a little goes a long way.
I had a friend send me some but is is so costly to send anything from here and vice versa.
I may consider buying online.
