  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Anyone else here like listening to the Bible on CD/MP3/etc?

I'm not normally into audio books (I like to see the words on paper in front of me, in my hands), but I've found that I like listening to scripture while driving. For instance, today I had a meeting 45 minutes away. In the hour and a half there and back, I listened to the last half of John and the first half of Acts. It's a nice way to get a "bird's eye" view of scripture -- listening to it provides larger chunks than I would usually read in one sitting.

It's not a replacement for in-depth reading and study, of course, but I find the different perspective to be a helpful addition to my usual reading. Anyone else do the audio-Bible thing?

I have the Bible on CD but haven't really listened to them. I found I get bored...my mind starts to wander. :sorry: I'm much more of a hands on person...I like to read, then re-read to kind of cement it into place. :)

Ooh, love this thread!

Do you know, I used to suffer from *dreadful* nightmares, and insomnia (the insomnnia has kicked in again something awful recently, but anyway) and listening to the Bible while I was falling asleep and having it on all night took the nightmares away and sorted out the insomnia. Stopped waking up feeling like death warmed up and terrified. It's no substitute for actual reading and study, but audio Bibles = awesomeness.

Green Munchkin - I'm going to try that - what a wonderful idea for when I can't get to sleep also!
You have trouble sleeping, also? Am sorry. It's horrid, isn't it :( It so helps. Also, waking up to hearing the Bible is just the best way to set the day off. It makes everything better :)

I don't listen to audio bibles, but I was chuffed with that ISA interlinear Bible you can download onto your computer for free at www.scripture4all.org

Someone on another forum introduced me to it. You soon get the hang of it, and then you can find the meaning of any word in the Bible or do a word search real quick on yer own PC.

I love that Hebrew script of the Old Testament that appears alongside a verse in English. There's something about that script that really makes my hair stand on end. I would like to learn Biblical Hebrew but I know it is a tough language to learn.

It's tough, but maybe not as much as you'd expect. I found it much easier than Greek, actually. It's a beautiful language. I'll bet the text my intro class used would be good for self-study -- I don't remember the title, but it's by Page Kelley, and there's an answer key available. FYI. ;)

Amen! I love the Hebrew also. For daily reading, I use a version of the Bible called The Scriptures - out of South Africa of all places. Both the name of YHVH and Yeshua are spelled in Hebrew and I can't tell you what excitement and what comfort I draw just by seeing the Hebrew letters. It's nice that someone else feels the same way!

Thanks for the info, Macrina!

Wow.. that's really neat! When I was a kid I used to have nightmares a lot (especially one recurring one...). Anyway, my mom told me to put a Bible under my pillow, and my grandmother bought me a glow-in-the-dark rosary (it glowed green and was SO cool!). Anyway, with the bible under my pillow and falling asleep hiding under the covers praying my nightmares went away! My daughter was having nightmares a while ago, and she reports that my mother's bible (the same one I used) under her pillow does the trick as well! ;) Purely psychological? Perhaps, but perhaps it's just that our minds are focused on God as we fall asleep -- you by listening, and my daughter and I by literally laying our head upon God's Word! ;)

As for the audio Bible though -- never considered it really... Too much noise around my house, and we don't regularly take long trips anymore! LOL

Maybe I'll consider playing an audio Bible at night though -- perhaps the subconscious grasps a lot of it while you are sleeping as well!

I had one of the first CD sets given to me a number of years ago, and enjoy listening to it in the car... Though, maybe because it's one of the first, I noticed at least 2 errors in the reading! I can't remember what they are now, but they were big enough to change the story a little! Maybe it's time for an update.

I'd like to replace my car tape and CD system for one of those radio/MP3 players where you just plug the memory stick into the front... Carrying around a small stick instead of many CDs would probably make me listen to it more!

K, so I've been listening along to my audio New Testament. I was liking it just fine all the way through the gospels, Acts, Romans, and First Corinthians.

Then it got to Second Corinthians, and three times during that book there was a random track inserted of gospel music, completely disrupting the flow of scripture. I suppose they thought they were adding to the mood or something, but 1) the songs clashed with the theme and tone of the passages, and 2) I thought I was buying a Bible, not a musical. I like gospel music, but I could buy a whole CD of it if I wanted to.

I'm only a little ways into Galatians so far, but the same thing has already happened.

'Sup with THAT?!?

Greek? What are you thinking, sister?

Well, OK - perhaps I'm a little bit envious because I don't know Greek and I only know a few Hebrew words! :( Go for it!

Haha! :D

Well, my denomination requires that candidates for ministry take at least two years each of Greek and Hebrew (up through a hermeneutics class), so I've formally studied both. They're just rather rusty, is all -- can muddle my way through with a lexicon, but sitting down with just the original text is fairly questionable. I figure this will help me remember all those things I've forgotten, and maybe gain more facility with the languages than I had before.

(I also ordered the OT in Hebrew.)
