What is most interesting I think, was the fact that they had an old style kneeler up front, like from when I was a kid in the Catholic church. Although this modern wording of the Nicene and Apostles' creeds does have us a little off ;) Was really interesting how the pastor stressed Real Presence in his sermon though. I think once my kids here that a few more times, they will be asking what it means.

My home church had kneelers in the pews that we used for Confession and Absolution. We also knelt (many of us anyway) after receiving the Lord's Supper to meditate.

There was a member here who offered to pay to have kneelers installed here, but the pews are too close together for them to fit. The number of pews correspond to the number of the founding families, so removing any was out of the question. It's too bad, too.

MrH,

I am glad the pastor spoke on the Real Presence. I was reading Ps. 53:4.

HAVE THE WORKERS OF WICKEDNESS NO KNOWLEDGE, WHO EAT UP MY PEOPLE AS THOUGH THEY ARE BREAD, AND HAVE NOT CALLED UPON GOD?

Lot of things eat people up. Their jobs consume them. Hopelessness eats at them. The rich eat the poor.

But at the table of our Lord, He consumes my sins, my unworthiness, and He places me in Hmself so that all He is, I can now call mine. He consumes the strangeness of my brother, and now when I look at him, I see my brother in a new way, for now we are one bread.

Peace,
Cos

I wish I could feel that close to man and God at communion.

Sunshine,

You don't have to feel "wet". Just jump in the pool. The water will soon do the rest.

You did not read my post on "Luther on the Reception of the Lord's Supper Post?" Go jump in the lake, so to speak. It is a portion of a very inspiring sermon and very helpful in approaching the mystery of the Real Presence.

Also read Luther's commentary on John 6.

Peace,
Cos

We have a kneeler that wraps around the alter for communion at our church as well. I really like taking communion like that.
^ What she said except I haven't taken communion on it (going to go through new member classes, then confirmation etc.) but I like the concept. From watching, it makes the whole experience more reverent.

Why don't you, Rad?
I dunno. We use the old Lutheran Hymnal and there is no time for reflection before going to communion. We are a small church and we sing a hymn right as we go up. I privately ask for forgiveness and think about the body and blood as I walk up. I guess it's just being a Lutheran all my life. Same old, same old. I'm still kinda in a funk I guess. Everything has lost it's flavor even though I have been in the word more,,,,well maybe more..

Have you tried preparing further in advance, repenting and focusing more on Christ's sacrifice beginning the night before, perhaps? Advance devotion and penitence might help get you past the numbness. Just a suggestion.

You're right. It's the proper procedure but the SciFi channel is too interesting the night before. Unfortunately the TV keeps me company now. Maybe when I go to bed I'll remember to pray and meditate.

The time prior to service is also a good time to prepare...

...that is if the folks aren't too busy "chatting" during the Prelude. That irritates me no end!
Prelude? What prelude? The church bell rings on the half hour and we all scramble for a seat while the pastor has an introductory address. No time to meditate. Anyway, I'll find the time somehow.

Still take it you haven't read the post on Luther's Reception of the Lord's Supper yet?

No TVLand for you until you do!

Ha! You and me both!
Once my feet hit the sanctuary carpet, I move quickly to the pew and bow my head to discourage anyone from chatting our direction. It is most distracting and disrespectful. Unfortunately, many of our oldest members are the ones instigating it.
I think louder organ music is the answer. :D
