I have been on both sides of the boat with mine. My daughter just turned 3 and when she was born, she wouldn't sleep in a bed by herself. She would scream and scream. So I brought her into the bed with me. I also breastfed her. I wore her and did not CIO. She is a high maintenance child and still requires me to sleep with her at times. She weaned at 2yrs 3mnths and started sleeping in her own bed shortly there after. I got pregnant with my son when my daughter was 15 months old. So she breastfed throughout my whole pregnancy (labor of love, let me tell you! LOL). When he was born, he took off like a champ at breastfeeding (20 min on each side). He slept in the same bed as me for about a month. Then he started waking up every hour and screaming. After a couple nights of that, I decided to try putting him in his own bed. That was the trick! He slept most of the night in his own bed and did wonderfully in it. My kids are totally opposites. My daughter nursed for over 2 years, my son only 3 months. I co-slept with my daughter for that 2 years, my son wanted his own bed at 1 month. And he's still the most independent thing. He hardly ever really needs anything. In fact sometimes I forget he's there. I think your children teach you how to care for them in a way. Mine taught me...hee hee I'm still learning!
