Then you haven't thought this through much. That we are animals, by definition, doesn't automatically say anything about whether or not we are better than other species. The converse of 'all humans are animals' is 'some animals are humans.' Therefore, if you think humans are special, all that our being animals implies is that some animals are special. Thus, no 'just' animals, no matter how you look at it. It's a ridiculous position.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but deists believe that a higher power set the universe in motion and then let it run its course from there without any divine intervention. So if scientists agree that human beings are animals that evolved over time like every other animal, I'm not sure why a deist *wouldn't* agree with it. The idea of a loving deity who hand molds human beings and considers them something special doesn't sound like deism to me.

The point is the use of the word 'just' to denigrate. When people say just an animal, they're implying that animals are fundamentally inferior to humans. Of course, humans are animals, so that's meaningless; we can't be inferior to ourselves. And when people say 'just' a theory they're usually trying to imply that evolution's standing as theory somehow makes it weak. That's nonsense; theory is the pinnacle of scientific method.

Evolution is a theory, and humans are animals. These are both true statements; introducing the word 'just' sneaks in a concept not inherent in either statement. It's that concept we're objecting to, not the true statement it is hijacking.

At thinking. Here are some things we are clearly not superior to other animals at:

Swimming
Single unarmed Combat
Flying
Hibernating
Moving quickly
Agility
Breathing through gills
Eating raw flesh
Holding our breath
Leaping
Climbing Trees
Living in walls
Seeing in the dark
Using sonar
Laying eggs
Stampeding
Pulling massive amounts of weight
Venom
Prehensil tail control
Changing skin color to match environment
Independant eye movement
Making Honey

The list goes on for a while, but you get the idea. We have to rely on tools to do most things other animals do just because it's what they do. We cheat, and while if your not cheating your not trying, it doesn't make us "superior" in and of itself.

We are pretty much at the top of the food chain. So yeah, we are pretty superior to most other animals. Doesn't change the fact that we, ourselves, are animals, though.

My ethical value system is not really all that close to the Christian one. There may be some similarities, but they are minor and flow from a different understanding of reality and ultimate values.
