Ed White was the first American to 'walk' in space during the Gemini program. He died in the Apollo 1 capsule fire with Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee.

I did not know that. Memory eternal. The Apollo 1 fire was such a terrible tragedy, the only good that came of it was an improvement in the safety culture at NASA, particularly in Mission Control.
