AN asteroid capable of devastating an area the size of a sub-continent has about a one in 1000 risk of hitting Earth early next century, NASA said today. The rock, 2004 VD17, is about 500m long and has a mass of nearly a billion tonnes. If it hit Earth it would deliver 10,000 megatonnes of energy, equivalent to all the world's nuclear weapons. Spotted on November 27 2004, VD17 was identified as potentially crossing Earth's orbit, with a one in 3000 risk of collision on May 4, 2102. Further observations and calculations have prompted the risk on that day to...

LONDON - Scientists are monitoring the progress of a 390m-wide asteroid discovered last year that is potentially on a collision course with the planet, and are imploring governments to decide on a strategy for dealing with it. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has estimated that an impact from Apophis, which has an outside chance of hitting the Earth in 2036, would release more than 100,000 times the energy released in the nuclear blast over Hiroshima. Thousands of square kilometres would be directly affected by the blast but the whole of the Earth would see the effects of the dust...
It's called Apophis. It's 390m wide. And it could hit Earth in 31 years time [Asteroid]

In Egyptian myth, Apophis was the ancient spirit of evil and destruction, a demon that was determined to plunge the world into eternal darkness. A fitting name, astronomers reasoned, for a menace now hurtling towards Earth from outerspace. The End Times Prophet's three lines from 2004, exposing one of the major illuminati brainwash agenda items that asteroids are used for, are just two clicks away.
Read by many but ignored by almost everyone, as the number of views of the crap above shows.

NASA Jet Propulsion Lab's current updates on Impact Risks:
http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/risk/

Here's the one we're worried (a little) about right now:
http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/risk/a99942.html

Aptly named "Apophis" with a possibly impact date between 2036 and 2050. The probability is 1 in 6,250.

To put this in perspective, "1 in 6000" is approximately the odds that you will die in a car crash in the next year.

This is a very real threat. However, the Apophis is not big enough to cause the end of the world. At worst, I think it would be on the scale of Huricane Katrina (if it hits near a population center and not in the ocean).

Huge asteroid to fly past Earth (Toutatis hoax - how and why)

HOW - 1. "actually you will not be able to see it ... " Spotting Toutatis Toutatis will not be visible to the unaided eye. Experienced telescope users can see it now from the Southern Hemisphere, and in early October it will be visible from the north. Finding Toutatis will be challenging, Harris said, due to a combination of the asteroid's position in the sky and interfering moonlight. Because the asteroid is so close, its location in the sky will vary significantly for skywatchers in different places on Earth at any given moment. And because it moves quickly, the location changes...

are you saying nasa released this information to brainwash the public?

They didnt say ""prepare for the end, as a huge asteroid is sure to cause mass extiction in a couple decades"" did they? They released factual info based on the data they recieved. Should they have not mentioned this discovery? NASA scientist do not release information like this to scare the public. Being that it is so far away, all they know is that it will come close, if there calculations are off, or something changes the tegectory of that asteroid it could potentialy hit us.

Being that this is unlikely scientist take this into consideration and annonouce that the chances of this are slim, just like they should. So I dont see anything wrong with this, and I dont believe It was meant to scare us either.
It is their responsobility to announce things such as this anyway. Its there job.

These guys dont look up at the night sky every night because they have nothing better to do you know.

No doubt there are people that take info like this and exagerate it though. Some bozo somewhere no doubt has a site claiming that this will be the end of times.

Understand though that this idea is not supported by NASA, because they are quite confident it will miss by a safe margin.
