  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is it ok to be assisted by someone in the Medical profession to end your life if you know beyond any doubt that you will be dead within six months from a degenerative and possibly mind-altering disease?

in my OP - yes, but only if the person suffering requests it.

I'd have to say yes. It's your life, you should have the right to end it.

Agreed- provided the patient has given clear and documented consent, and has requested it of their own accord. (i.e.- the doctor shouldn't be the one to broach the subject.)

It would be considered an act of cruelty if we kept our pets "alive" in the conditions some people are forced to endure as a result of how far the medical profession has come.

Yet we force people to spends months, years, even decades in such a state simply because we can. IMO, there is something incredibly backwards about that.

I am all in favour of self termination when everything is has failed and its just a matter of time. This is just my opinion for me and me only and no one else. I do believe its the individual's right to end terminal suffering.

When my unit getting ready for deployment during Desert Shield/Storm, I made sure the family knew that if I came home in certain medical conditions, pull the plug or have a doc (if possible) do it quickly and painlessly.

Every single person on Earth is assured of dying in the future. Do you think it is okay for a doctor to kill anybody because they will for sure die? Why just the six month deadline? Why should having a mind-altering disease affect the decision?

Anyhow, I believe Jack Kevorkian is in prison right now for assisting in murders.

lets see....

lets observe the differences and similarites in these two situations.

SIMILARATIES:

normal person: will die in the future
six month person: will die in the future

normal person: currently alive
six month person: currently alive

good so far, now forthe differences...

DIFFERENCES:

normal person: will die in some unknown time
six month person: will die soon

Normal person: will die in an unknown situation, hopefully painlessly
six month person: will die after expereincing a seemingly enternal torture

Normal person: doesn't want to die
six month person: wants to die before he goes past the point where he is able to make decisions

If someone would like to make a comparision like the above again to try to prove that they shouldn't be alowed to end their own life....hmm....

I'd live as best I could before I started feeling the effects and then I'd go with assissted suicide. Although I'd try for regular suicide before hand to prevent legal issues.

It makes me wonder what the line is like legally. For example, if you put a gun in someone's room and they shoot themselves, are you responsible, or where you just giving them a choice? In almost all cases of assisted suicide I've seen, the sufferer is cognitive or has made their wishes clearly known.

And a man who ordered lifesupport to be terminated isn't. What's your point?

Anyway, I have moved to Germany from Holland and I hope they'll legalise euthanasia here in the future. I'd like to get the option to get euthanasia (or help someone kill me if you like) if the situation warrants it in my perspective.

I support the practise. I think it is immoral to kill a person against their will, whereas it is moral to kill a person in accordance with their will. Unfortunately, not many Christians think like this. Many have no hesitations with sending their loved ones off to get their heads blown off on some battlefield, whereas the ones who survive and get brought home can suffer mind-altering diseases and they are locked into hell for eternity as a result.

The only real debate about euthanasia, other than the typical resistance from the Christian camp, is the widespread belief that doctors only purpose is to heal the sick.

But what is never considered, what if the sick can't be healed?

All that needs to be done to clear up this misconception is educating the herd, and ignoring the Christbots.

The poster asked if assisting in a suicide is okay so I gave an example of someone doing just that being in jail to illistrate that it itis not considered okay - that was my point.

Artificail life support is different - it is keeping someone alive by extraordinary and artificial means.
