So a while back a friend from work had all these games for sale and gave them to me for like 15 bucks. I never was interested in these games, but the new one (3) is about the revolutionary war and that seemed interesting so I got them from him. While playing I noticed a lot of things that seemed anti-Christian in it and it bothered me. For instance the game has you climb to the highest point in different sections of the city to get a (birds eye view). The problem with that is the highest point is always a church and they have you climb on top of the Crosses on each church to get that (view). I feel that it was overkill and there is no reason for your character to stand on the Cross and it offended me.

There also seemed to be other pokes at Christianity. Also at the tittle screen there is a message about how the makers of the game are from different religions. Why point that out?

So I got this bad feeling about the game and I went and threw them all away in the trash. I feel much better. I was wondering what anyone else's take is on these games.

You made a mountain out of a mole hill dude....it's just a vantage point. A human perches on it..BIRDS perch on it...jeez.

And the disclaimer is made because The whole plot of the game goes against the fundamentals of many faiths, more or less. They just don't want it to seem like they're trying to do a smear job on the religions. It's a GAME. A big concept behind the first game is how religion itself is basically a piece of Eden. Powerful people can use it to bend the will of the weak minded. They can control everything from what people eat to how they conduct themselves. Basically, they describe religion as nothing but a tool, which could really [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] off someone who took the ideas of fictional characters too seriously. This is one of many reasons why the disclaimer exists. I believe the disclaimer is necessary, and that you shouldn't over-react.

If you feel something is bad for you, you should not sell it to someone else. That was not wasting money to me. I paid 15 dollars for all the games combined and thought them to be bad. I felt bad playing them and decided I should not play them. I then decided that if it would be wrong for me to play it than it would be wrong for me to sell them to someone else. That to me is getting rid of garbage that could be bad for someone else.

Same thing as an alcoholic deciding to quit and help themselves. They know it is bad so they throw it away instead of giving it or selling it to someone who may be badly influenced by it. I hope you understand that concept.

Well, if church builders wouldn't put the cross at the top of the building then you wouldn't have to climb on it to get a better view.

I think it was put there in a very spirited but overoptimistic attempt to try and mitigate the reactions of people who are easily offended.

*cough*

So pointing out that people of other faiths exist is.....what, a poke at Christianity?

To be fairs its called architecture. Its not like building makers expect people to be on the roof. In the past games you would climb to the top of many various things, not just crosses. Its how your character shows more parts of the map.

They point it out to show theres no bias or hatred of a religion and/or view. They are saying "We made this game with people that have many views so that no one will feel hurt by the game!". They also say that because most games tend to hold morals of whatever only one view.

As for not playing it. Obviously if you feel convicted then don't play it. But even so its not a antichristian game. Of course its not for it either really. Its neutral. Now if you played the past ones then you know the one takes place in Jerusalem. It even has templar knights in it, although if I recall you have to kill them because they are...well I can't post it since its a spoiler.

Some would be offended by the fact your killing in Jerusalem or that your killing the templar knights. But thats all up to the person and if they feel convicted.

The Assassin's Creed series is very anti-Christian, but not for any of the reasons you mentioned. What you mentioned extremely mild compared to many points made throughout the game's plotlines. Such things include:

  • lines such as "Acts of man are always better than acts of God",
  • a few characters claiming that they have discovered there is no life after death
  • When Ezio speaks to the pope in one of the games, he refers to God as "your God"
  • This same pope refers to the Bible as a book written by men. However, this pope was the notorious Pope Alexander VI, who after any quick glance at history, was pretty clearly not a true believer anyways, but this could still be interpreted as yet another jab at Christianity
  • Catholicism is pretty heavily bashed in the Ezio Assassin's Creed games. In fact, it is a major antogonistic organization in the game's storyline
  • Pretty much every Christian character is corrupt
  • There are several spoilers which I won't go into, but the spoilers directly reject many things in the Bible, not the least of which being the divinity of Jesus
  • Atheism is pretty much confirmed as being the truth in the game's storyline

With all that said, they are still amazing games.

I knew from the first game this story was gonna be a euro atheist view of the world with a dash of created by some intelligent design. It was all Sci fi, Science was the "god" of this game. Nothing different then the views shown in Dr.Who. I enjoyed the game play and I liked the story they were trying to go for.
