  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So I need a raise. It's been 5 years since my last one. My work load has not increased but my income is decreasing this month since my older son turned 18. Now I will no longer get social security for him. I had hoped they would raise the younger son's amount, but I just found out that will not happen. Apparently he is already getting the max he is allowed to get which is 75 percent of my husband's amount soooooo....
Anyway I decided to ask for a raise. I also decided to write it instead of asking directly. I wanted to know if you have any thoughts on any of it.
Here is what I wrote. I haven't given it to him yet. I plan on leaving it on his desk after he leaves so he will see it in the morning before I come in. That way he will have time to think about it and not be put on the spot. Plus I feel I can verbalize in writing better and get all my thoughts on paper. Tell me what you think.

This is a hard thing for me to ask you, and I didn’t want to put you on the spot so I decided to put it in writing. It’s also easier for me to get my thoughts out this way and give you time to think about it before answering me. I would like to know if it’s possible for you to give me a raise? I feel bad having to ask for it, because I know sometimes you don’t take your paycheck, but I also haven’t had a raise in the last 5 years. I appreciate all you do for us and I am grateful to have a job in this economy. I am not looking for employment elsewhere, and I do enjoy working here. As you know, in October I took on a second job. The hours are not consistent and it’s considerably less than I make here but I had to do something. This month I found out that I am losing almost 1200.00 per month from social security since XXXXXXX is now 18 and graduated. I know that my financial situation is not your problem. I have to look at all my options. Even with a raise I might have to get a third job, I don’t know. So what I would like to ask for is a $2.00 an hour increase. That is roughly cost of living over the past 5 years. If you can do this for me, I would be content not to have another raise for a few more years. If you cannot, I will understand and it won’t change my performance or my desire to remain employed here. Thank you for considering it.
