Ask them out on a date: "I'll pray about it"

As a Christian, this is something I don't get. You ask someone out, and they say they will "Pray about it".

I Googled this, and saw this article about how Christian dating these days is weird.

The article starts off with Christians saying things to their prospects,"I prayed to God, and he said that we'll be together" or "God sent you to me in a dream" and inferring that that person will be your future spouse:

There's just something so cringy about these responses.

Why Is Christian Dating So Weird? | RELEVANT

Some Christians make dating weird through over spiritual language. Has someone responded with “I will pray” when you asked them on a date? I heard it once. Cringe. There’s also the Christian classic, “God didn’t give me peace about you” when breaking up. These lines are simply a softer version of God-said-this and God-told-me-that wackiness. You could label these lines “spiritual euphemisms.”

Notice there's even an excuse they use God to break up a relationship.

So when people use this verbiage, in the context of dating, is it truly rather strange and cringy for you? Even as a Christian?

I mean, if you express interest in someone, don't say God told you, it is YOU that wants to.

Yeah, it would seem right cringe worthy.

"Where would you like to eat tonight?"
"Hold on, let's pray about it."
"Nevermind."

"God sent you to me in a dream"
"That's odd, I had the exact same nightmare."

Well, like everything else it is important to get Gods opinion. Do you want to waste your time on someone that is unequally yoked. If you are just out for fun I guess it isn't that important but we are who we run with, Do you really want to associate with anyone, devilish, ungodly, dishonest, the list goes on. Needing Gods input for your everyday circumstances is important.

You don't need to pray on it, just...go out with them to see what they are like.

Absolutely agreed. Especially using this language when you barely know each other, like for a first date. I mean, would someone say "I will pray about it" if they were asked to go bowling with some new acquaintances? No. Christians tend to overthink the whole dating thing. Maybe that's one reason so many of us are single.

Sometimes God nudges you. But you usually don’t invite it. He’s getting in your business. ;)

I will say this much. God isn’t talking to anything about bella without clueing me in. Most statements along those lines are one-sided. It’s wishful thinking.

I won’t believe you. Please don’t say it. :D

Yours in His Service,

~bella

What can you say, some Christians are out there.

I suppose praying about it is fine, but the problem with that and other things some pray for, is the reply from God is often something they just made up because it works for them.

Hopfully these are just unseasonrd Christians, as I would hate to think the vast majority thought like that.

Don't you discuss things that important with God?
I talk to God all day long. I don't necessarily get an answer and I am not always looking for one. I just like the relationship.

It can also could have another meaning but I'd have to refer to the white lie topic to answer it but I'd just as soon not, lol

Yes, I do. But its the other part I try to stay away from. Like "God told me to do this or that", when in reality, God told us nothing.

Some preachers especially, are guilty of that, makes them look good to the congregation, but I generally doubt God told them anything.

Some people simply get carried away and tell themselves things that are not real.

Some people don’t acknowledge or respond well to disinterest. “I’ll pray” may be a way of eliminating problems.

I mean, if you express interest in someone, don't say God told you, it is YOU that wants to.
If she told me "I'll pray about it" when I ask her, then she has until the day that I intended to take her out to come back with a "yes". Otherwise, I'm going to treat it as a "no," and her immaturity has confirmed itself to me. Perhaps this is overly generous. I am open to suggestions for how to make this smoother or better handle it within that short timeframe. I will not be strung on again.

If she approaches me and I like her, and she gives me the "God sent you to me in a dream" bit, then I will take advantage of that situation and give her at least one date.

Either way, I will do my best to help her grow by steering it from God's will to what she wants. God's will for all Christians when dating is concrete enough that I don't have to depend on what she thinks God is telling her. A Godly woman is responsible for her words, actions, and feelings, and I will hold her to this. If she takes to it, then maybe she has potential. However, I don't expect these fuzzy lines from a Christian woman who has known the Lord for a while.

If my prayers ever become THIS bad, I think a 40 day water fast, coupled with a spiritual overhaul, a long look in the mirror, and a big ol' can of 'man up' would be in order.

I mean, earth to planet Disney Channel! Er, wake up?

Lol, I don't want to sound overly judgemental, but prayer is precious. And there's only SO much time in the day. Treat prayer like saffron - intelligently placed sprinklings of a HIGH quality spice, over heavy lashings of an inferior cheap pepper. And savour the experience.

I think I'm more hungry than anything else at this point... It was probably the fasting talk that did it.

I don't see anything wrong at all w/ someone saying they'll pray about it. Of course you & them should be praying about it!!!

But using that as a sort of pick-up line: a man definitely shouldn't say it

We are encouraged to pray constantly. I actually want to get better at this.

Yet, I would guess many respond quite well to disinterest.

Not sure what you meant by "eliminating problems".
