You mention 'threat of hell' as the basis for a christian's faith? If you only knew God; 'fear' in christianity means great respect - not 'fright' as in Islam.
Tell that to your Christian brethren who seek to convert people with threats of fire and brimstone. Are you trying to suggest that they don't know God?
As in hermeneutics, the first rule is 'let the bible interpret itself.' God foresaw the multiple interpretations mankind would read of his word and it is for his glory... so that each person in his/her own way finds Him... but His glory includes clarifying everything on the Lord's day.
If there's one way of communication that's entirely unfit for transcendental insights, it's language: language is self-referential; it can only point to artificial categories and dichotomies that are a part of itself. As such, multiple interpretations are not only to be expected, they are unavoidable - especially considering that the Bible is not a monolithic whole, but a heterogeneous anthology.
Who can know Him unless one has His mind/spirit?
Actually, I agree with you here: the only way to even glimpse a tiny faction of the incomprehensible, transcendental Reality is to experience it - to be touched by it. Texts cannot possibly be of help there.
I stayed away from your 'ask a pantheist' seeing you did not answer my responses in the 'paul' thread.
Guess I must have missed it. I think I'll look it up; maybe there's some good discussion to be had.
Can we see an actual photo of you?
I'll think about it.
Why do you hide behind a fictitous character?
Hide? I think you are reading quite a lot into that. People use images of tentacled monsters as their avatars, yet I wouldn't go so far as to insinuate that they are "hiding" behind those.
At first I was tempted to interpret this question as a personal attack; a kind of
argumentum ad hominem. Perhaps it is - but it's an intriguing question nevertheless.
The most simple answer to your question, as off-topic and inappropriate as it may be, is that I'm a fan of the lovely Miss Hannigan and/or the character she played on BtVS. Now, as to
why people might put up pictures of people they adore, I think there's quite a complex psychological dimension to that.
It reminds me of the masks we all wear (and are), even if we are not aware of it. We act differently around different people, without actually trying to deceive - it just follows naturally that we are not the same person in all circumstances. I think of it in terms that are remotely similar to pan(en)theism: my masks are all a part of me, though I transcend them all. My avatar is just an image, just as "Jane the Bane" is - naturally - not my actual name.
