  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I volunteer though a group called Mission Year. I work at an employment center in a computer lab during the day helping people with resume's and such. In the evenings, I volunteer at afterschool programs.

My weekend plans are to be bored out of my mind saturday because I have all day training, and I am sick. Sunday I will go to church and that is probably all.

I like what I do most of the time. One of the after school programs gets a little tricky working with the kids because there idea of what's appropriate and what is appropriate is two completely different things. 1 quick example is I walked into the gym one time and one of the older boys was in his boxers(well his pants were around his knee's like normal) and had his shirt off playing basketball. He was stopped for a second talking to two girls. From what little I observed nothing bad happened, but they thought there was nothing wrong with the fact he was half naked(in a compromising way), or the fact a lot of the music they like shows half naked(or naked) women.

Keep in mind both the after school programs I work at are secular, though one of them you would think otherwise. I agree it is crossing the line, but it's a matter of how do you deal with something like that in a secular environment while keeping a Christ loving attitude where that is not considered inappropriate without causing mass chaos? I honestly don't know.

Another example of something that happened in my other after school program I work at is 2 sisters(5 and 7) got their first "bra's" yesterday. They wear uniforms with button up shirts to school. I had already caught some of the kids in the van writing cuss words in the fog on the windows. Because of this when one of the girls went "look at this" I turned around to see what they where doing(I thought someone was writing more cuss words). It turns out that they had decided to unbutton their shirts and show their bra's off. Obviously not a good thing, but they didn't know better. I tried to react in a calm manner, and to tell them to get their shirts buttoned back up, but one of the other sponsors went off yelling at them. I felt that was not appropriate since they didn't know better, but once again, what is truly the best way to deal with a bad situation in a secular environment where they don't realize it's inappropriate, and going off and talking down to them is only going to make the situation worse. I did meet with the girls after we got to the center and explained to them why they got in trouble, and why they shouldn't do that.

I think it's awesome you volunteer at such a place! My volunteering is usually at places that are much less troublesome (and probably much less rewarding!).

I am moving to Chicago in May or June....

Do the subways take you to the West Garfield Park part of Chicago?

What's your favorite place in Chicago?

Where's the best pizza to be found?
To say that your places aren't as rewarding because they are less troublesome doesn't always make them less rewarding...It all depends on you as a person, and where your heart is.
Yes, they do take you out here, but I wouldn't come as a tourist.
To say I have a favorite place is hard, but I would say Navy Pier or Mellenium Park
The best pizza is a really hard one. There is a place called Pizzano's(I think that's how it's spelled) right off michigan ave and Madison. There there is Home Run Inn pizza, and a whole host of other pizza places. :yum:

Will you be alone or with someone for Valentines?
Technically I won't be alone, as I will be spending the evening with my roommates doing stupid stuff required by the program I am in. But yes, I will not have a date once again. :sigh:
