Various studies have come up with slightly different numbers, but all the figures are grim. According to the Index of Leading Cultural Indicators, children from single-parent families account for 63 percent of all youth suicides, 70 percent of all teenage pregnancies, 71 percent of all adolescent chemical/substance abuse, 80 percent of all prison inmates, and 90 percent of all homeless and runaway children.

A study cited in the Village Voice produced similar numbers. It found that children brought up in single-mother homes ‘are five times more likely to commit suicide, nine times more likely to drop out of high school, 10 times more likely to abuse chemical substances, 14 times more likely to commit rape (for the boys), 20 times more likely to end up in prison, and 32 times more likely to run away from home.’ Single motherhood is like a farm team for future criminals and social outcasts.

To add to Chalnoth's response, we also have "smellevision" for the other end of the electronic nose. Unlike our three color receptors, we have hundreds of different smell/taste receptors. And to complicate matters, we also have different perception of the same flavors, so that even if we could use less chemicals to stimulate less receptors and get an approximation of the smell, without using the same molecule odds are at least some of them would smell quite different from the real thing to different people.

In theory, there are more different chemicals in just organic chemistry than there are stars in the sky.

First, these statistics are notoriously exaggerated - for example, suicide rates are triple, not quintupled, and equates to just 1-2.2% of children raised primarily by a single parent.

Second, the fundamental fallacy of this 'argument' against single parenthood is that it's the primary carer's choice to be a single parent. Most often it's not. It's ludicrous to heap the blame for society's ills on widows.

Third, I'm disinclined to trust an avowedly bigoted hate-monger like Coulter. The key phrase is, "Controlling for socioeconomic status, race, and place of residence...". This means that, taking away the three big causes of crime, you're left with one predictor of crime. Moreover, I've italicised those two words for a reason: socioeconomic status can directly drive a person into crime, but single parenthood is a predictor, meaning that there is only a correlation that is evident. In other words, Coulter is making the fundamental statistical fallacy of equating correlation with causation.

Undoubtedly, and surveys have shown that the gender-pairing of the parental unit is irrelevant. Male-male, male-female, and female-female couples are all equally good at rearing children.

Undoubtedly. However, as I said before, this correlation does not mean single parents are the cause of criminal behaviour - to claim this is a statistical fallacy. The reason single parents are more likely to rear criminals than coupled parents stems, in part, from the reason their single in the first place. For instance, poverty, poor social conditions, and poor education, mean younger people are more likely to have sex and kids without thinking of the consequences, leading to single parents (often single mothers). These conditions also lead to criminal behaviour - people are more inclined to rob and steal and form gangs if they're forced to out of neccesity. This is one possible explanation for the "single parents are more likely to have criminal kids" statstics - not because single parents are inherently worse, but because the root cause of their being a single parent also causes all kids (whether raised by single- or coupled- parents) to be criminal. These factors are pointed out by the article you cited: "the bulk of unwed births are to young women, typically in their 20s, who are not college-educated and are not prospering" - i.e., young, poor, and uneducated.

Now, this is a hypothetical to illustrate a point - namely, that correlation doesn't imply causation - but my true feelings on this are that single parenthood does cause, in and of itself, harsher environments on the kids, and thus is more likely to cause the kids to become criminals. This is due to a variety of reasons, including logistical and economic reasons (one payday instead of two, one parent to organise everything instead of two, etc). There may also be societal pressures against helping single parents, particularly single mothers, perhaps due to religious stigma of out-of-wedlock children (religious stigma against contraception and abortion is, ironically, also a big cause of single parenthood in itself).

So, as I said before, it is ludicrous to dump all of society's ills on single parents. That there is a correlation showing that children raised by a single parent are more likely to be criminals, does not mean that single parents are inherently worse at parenthood than coupled parents.

I think that's rather the problem: they can't afford it. As I said, it's likely that most single parents on benefits live in inner cities because inner cities breed single parents who will then go on to claim benefits.

My point is that you made a claim, and I'm asking for a source. By 'source', I mean the reputable, verifiable, and empirical study or survey or scientific paper that lead you to your conclusion - your 'source' of information. A comedian does not a study make.

In other words, I'm asking you for hard facts and figures that corroborate your claim (which, if you'll recall, was about a) taking the Muslim approach to handling local drug crime, rebranding it with Christian ideology and symbology, and rolling it out across the US, and b) making sure that this project had no secular involvement).

I'm glad to hear that you also think that Stephen Colbert is one of the wisest and most truth-speaking people out there. I also like him.

The book of Revelation was a super spookfest to me.

However, there were a few passages that gave specific dimensions and constructions of what Heaven would be like.

Has anyone ever engineered a detailed drawing or some kind of blueprint based on the model the Bible describes?

Probably. But personally I see that as having as much meaning as building a detailed blueprint of the Starship Enterprise.

Well Mr Wicca had said that he thought the whole religious community ought be excluded from consideration, meaning the christians.

my point is that the politicians and the drug dealers are into profit end of the equation, so who is left to stop this except the religious rightin the Institution of Religion.

the Institution of Law and Order has clearly failed.

Wicca said he didn't even believe the religious people could get results, so i mentioned the muslim efforts.
But the Christians in some places do the same ting:



Combating fear with nonviolence

Regina Shands Stoltzfus '84 arrived in Goshen in the early 1980s loaded with concern for peace and justice, but without a clear target for her passion. Goshen College helped her focus her aim.

The founder of Mennonite Central Committee's Damascus Road anti-racism project, she is associate pastor of Lee Heights Community Church in Cleveland, Ohio, a congregation founded on Christ's teachings of peace and acceptance. So when drug dealers moved into the parking lot of this inner-city church, the congregation responded in the only way it saw fit: nonviolently.

According to Shands Stoltzfus, the neighborhood's growing drug problem affected not only the community's residents, who were afraid to leave their homes, but also those involved with Lee Heights' daycare center. The congregation decided to act.

In an effort to nonviolently confront the drug traffickers, members of the congregation began sitting outside of the church during the day, making their presence known to the drug dealers. "They were seeing that we were seeing what they were doing," Shands Stoltzfus said. A few members spoke with the dealers, inviting them to the Narcotics Anonymous meetings held weekly at the church. Although the dealers rejected the offer, they eventually lost their nerve and "slunk away," she said.

Over time, the neighborhood regained its peaceful atmosphere. "Children can go for a walk and people can come out of their houses," she said. "It's a really different feeling."

Shands Stoltzfus has been active in continuing related efforts. Lee Heights Community Church recently formed a Christian Peacemaker Team, which will respond to violence within the city. "I believe the establishment of that team grew out of an awareness of (confronting the drug dealers)," she said.

Common, decent people who are willing to stand up for injustice. The religious right stands on the side of the drug dealers, corrupt politicians, and the profiteering corporations, not against them.
