Excuse me while I let my curmudgeonly side out for a bit.
To be perfectly honest, I tend to think that 80% or better of most websites on the topic of magic are put up by people who tend to like talking about magic a heck of a lot more than they actually work magic. (On my more self-critical days, I'd include myself in that group, too.) There are obviously going to be exceptions, but there are also a lot of websites that aren't exceptions either.
Hrm...not sure I like that word, "control." It implies a lot of things that I just don't think are true. Personally, I think buying into the illusion that you are in control can lead to all kinds of problems.
Having said that, one who can learn to work effective magic has a lot of influence. They can do things that can really change their and others' current circumstances. The really smart ones learn how to do this with amazing finesse and grace (and I can only hope that I will be counted among their number decades from now).
The down side to that is that with magic, one can really change their and others' circumstances. Thing is, not all changes are for the better, and not all changes that "look good" at first look as great upon closer inspection. Changing the world around you (even on a small scale) can be great, but making sure you leave it in a better state than you originally found it in can be a ponderous responsibility.
