Joseph Smith said that there are men living on the moon who dress like Quakers and live to be nearly 1000 years old. Since he was wrong about the moon, is it safe to trust him regarding the way to Heaven?

This is another issue in which critics of the church tend to be lacking in their history.

At some point in the early 1800s, false reports began circulating in various newspapers to the effect that life had been found on the Moon.

It's entirely plausible, then, that Joseph had read such a false report in some newspaper somewhere and was merely repeating what he legitimately thought to be the big scientific discovery of his day.

I read a book called Mormonism: Shadow Or Reality? which claims to expose frauds and problems within Mormon history. The records that they use are Mormon records and there is a wealth of primary sources, from the Journal of Discourses to the highly embarrassing and racist talks given by some of the Mormon leaders.
I don't want to be offensive here, but one of my best buddies was born and raised Mormon, went to church every Sunday plus seminary 5 days a week during high school. And he is very strong in his belief now that the Book of Mormon is a work of fiction.

If you're going to claim it, please provide support. Or is it only your opinion (and potentially your imagination) that Joseph Smith said what you claim he said?

Why would LDS find offensive that some people lose faith in their beliefs? I know Catholics who have joined the LDS church. That doesn't offend you, does it? :)

It was in a book I read called Shadow or Reality? by Jerald and Sandra Tanner, page 4 if you want to check it out.

It doesn't offend me, no. But tell me, if the Book of Mormon is true, why do Indians fail to turn white when they become Mormons?

How many doors have you gone to?
Do you use a script? If so, did you write it?
I served a proselytizing mission in Spain. With my various companions, I must have knocked on over 10,000 doors. At least. We did not use a script. In fact, most of the time we didn't even get to speak to anyone. Most doors were never opened at all. I did find, though, that as my language skill improved and my accent became more Castellano/Madrileño/Andaluz than Gringo, opportunities to actually talk to people increased.

I'm not really interested in guesswork, or in doing other people's homework. If a poster can't produce a quote as support, there is little reason for me to give credence to his claims. You know what I mean?

Why would they?

2 Nephi 30:6.
"When the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a new edition of the Book of Mormon in 1981, a change was made to the text of 2 Nephi 30:6. The 1830 and most earlier editions said that the descendants of Lehi would become “a white and delightsome people.” The new edition reads “pure and delightsome.” This change was first made in the 1840 Nauvoo edition of the Book of Mormon by Joseph Smith, but later editions did not rely on that one, so the change was not reflected for more than a century, until it was restored to the 1981 edition."

Man it's a good thing famous Christian leaders like Popes never issued anything embarrassingly racist, otherwise this argument of yours could be used against your own faith.

True. But isn't it racist to believe you're special because you're Jewish? How is that any different from the Nazi belief in the "superiority" of the Aryan race, for example?

I'll have to go back and find it, but a few years ago we had a study come out which noted that both Mormons and non-Mormons alike could often tell at a glance who was and wasn't Mormon.

The hypothesis produced by the researchers was that the healthy lifestyle encouraged by the church resulted in a healthier appearance, which included clearer skin and eyes.

Call it what you like. If you make a claim, but don't provide support, you have made nothing but an opinion. Either Joseph Smith said what you claimed he did, or he didn't. From what you've provided for support, a person could believe whatever he wanted and his belief would have just as much weight as your claim.
