  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I hear that most Asian horror is miles beyond American horror.

That statement is definitely true.

However, having seen the American versions and Japanese versions of both Ju-on/The Grudge and Ringu/The Ring, I can tell you confidently that I like the American versions much better.

I haven't seen The Grudge or The Ring, so I guess I'll have to check them out soon :D I heard the director of Ju-On actually helped with directing the Grudge, so I figure it has to be a pretty good adaptation :)

Thanks for the list. Besides the Host, is there anything in particular you recommend from it?

Ringu= teh scareh  You won't be disappointed.
Audition is pretty good and terrifying. It should be quite easy to get hold of as it's fairly well-known, compared with a lot of Asian horror. There are a lot of films by the same director which are also very popular, so it might be worth checking them out.
Dumplings is also quite scary, in a different way.
There was one more I wanted to mention, but I forgot what it's called....grrr. This is annoying. I'll come back if I remember.

I say A Tale of Two Sisters last week and was completely blown away. I hear that most Asian horror is miles beyond American horror. So I was looking for recommendations. I picked up Ju-on and Ringu, and I'm looking forward to those. So yeah, anything else? ^_^
A Tale of Two Sisters/Janghwa,Hongryeon was AWESOME!,I also loved~
The Ring/Ringu
The Eye/ Gin gwai and~
Dark Water/Honogurai mizu no soko kara(the American version is pretty good as well)

I had to use the Asian titles to get the Asian versions of these from my library.

What I really love about these,is no filththy language, and much more atmosphere/suspense than the slasher/gore/sex/vulgarity, garbage, Americans have come to call horror.

Here are some more ideas, but I haven't seen these.

Ghost Train/Otoshimono

lol, when I watched Audition with my friend she ran out of the room screaming at the eye bit. And she's usually good with horror :p (I freak her out by saying KiriKiri...it's not nice I know...)

I really enjoyed Ringu and Ju-on, But I found Kairo (Pulse) to be a bit boring...
Happiness of the Katakuris just kind of broke my brain. lol, that was ridiculous.

HeyHomie - I didn't really like the American version of the Grudge. It made more sense over all then Ju On, and it had fewer story lines, but I still though JuOn was better. i haven't seen The Ring yet though, so I can't compare those yet :)

I want more Asian horror, but said screaming friend won't watch any more with me. sadface. I guess I'll just have to watch them on my own.

But on my to see list now :)
Dumplings
Dark Water
The Eye
Kwaidan
Ghost Train
Junk
Lady Snowblood

That statement isn't true.
The Asian horror phenom is just like all other horror blockbusters before it.
It's just another new fresh look at horror, it's something that catches you off guard becuase it is a new style.
Then it's done to death and becomes boring.

Asian Horror isn't even all that new, it's in the same style as The Shining.

Asian horror isn't better than movies like Psycho, Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
They aren't better, they are the same.
The same in that in their day they scared people silly and had people talking about the movie for days.

I didn't find TCM intriguing, though I'll agree The Shining and Psycho are great movies. in fact, Psycho is just one of many Hitchcock films I love. Of course Asian horror is new to me, but that doesn't mean it's not fantastic and beyond what's been coming out in America lately. A lot of the horror that's been out recently is just remakes, and from what I've seen, the originals are better.

I didn't mean that statement as a fact, that there's nothing good coming out of American, British, French, or whatever cinema. Just that I have heard a lot about Asian horror being amazing and that I wanted to see it and hear recommendations....

Which TCM, the 1974 version or the 1995 remake?
The remake gets away from what made it such a classic.
The victims in the first one acted the way you would act if you were in that situation.
So it wasn't so much what leather face did to the victims it was how they reacted. Especially the lead actress, her performance along with the writting and directing made this the most realistic slasher movie I can think of.
There are so many things in this movie that work to unnerve you and it does that effectively.
The wierd sound effects, the graveyard scene, the slaughter house, the hook......THE HOOK, the blood curdling screams, the wheelchair scene, etc.

It's one of my favorites.

The Ring (american version) was the scariest movie I've seen in a long long long time.

I've only seen the original TCM...I guess I'm just to desensitized...
But yeah, the victims did act pretty realistically. It wasn't a bad horror flick, I just didn't really enjoy it like I do with most.

I'll have to check out the American version of the Ring though. :)

Try the Thai movie "Shutter". Sooooo scary! I don't know if it's available with subtitles yet, but I would imagine so by now.

There are some other Thai horror movies that are crazy scary. I'll try to find out the English titles for you.
I've seen some of the previews for Shutter, I'll add it to my list. I think they're remaking it too :p Any recommendations you have are great, I don't even know where to begin :D

I think it might be a while before I can get another Miike movie though, haha...

Gah. They shouldn't remake it. It's great the way it is.

Mostly I worry that without the cultural aspects, it's not going to make much sense at all. It'll just be jump-at-you scary (a quality it has, but is not limited to). Oh well.

Is it really such a horrible concept to watch a movie from another country? Why does America have to always remake things. Grr.

I agree. I think the funniest thing about The Grudge was how they obviously dumbed it down for American audiences. I'll admit, i didn't pick everything up watching Ju On, but that's because of language and cultural differences. I'd think they'd be able to be as subtle in the remake, but I'm wrong.

Did you hear they're also remaking Akira into a live action movie set in NY?
