I'm an AS individual who also has synesthesia. Synesthesia is a sort of "cross-wiring" of senses in the brain so that some form of sensory input is in fact perceived by more than the "appropriate" senses. For instance, I hear sound, but at the same time I "see" in as projected image in my head. This image isn't an association, but an instant perception: I know that my brother's voice is burnt orange with jaggedy edges(burnt orange is one of my least favorite colors, which is a shame, because I love my brother) the same way I know that a brick building I see is red.
I've just heard that people with ASD tend to have synesthesia, so I was curious if anyone here had it. It was frustrating for me to figure out at first, because people kept thinking I was "making it up"--why would I bother doing that? In total, I have sound-visual, sound-taste, sound-movement, time-visual, touch-visual, sound-touch, and smell-visual synethesia. That on top of "normal" sensory difficulties--no wonder I can get so easily overwhelmed!
For more information on synesthesia, check out Wikipedia or try Googling it(I don't have enough posts to put up links).
