Help me understand why all nations should abide by international rules except the United States.

I'm just having trouble grasping that level of American Exceptionality. How come other countries with drug problems are obliged to abide by those agreements but the US is not.

Plenty of countries don't abide by international rules.

In fact, no country has to abide by those rules. You just have to be powerful or uncaring enough to live with any consequences.

Vance basically said on twitter that he doesn't care if blowing up that boat was a war crime. I think the direct quote would be a violation of forum rules.
That is not what Vance said on X. He was directly responding to a progressive liberal commentator who said it was a war crime in response to Vice President Vance posting, "“Killing cartel members who poison our fellow citizens is the highest and best use of our military."
Brian Krassenstein replied calling this a war crime. The Vice President replied to Krassenstein telling him that he doesn't care what Krassenstein's opinion about this is. Note, the Vice President did NOT say that this was a war crime.

It's because there should be no such thing as "international rules" and you guys shouldn't be forced to abide by them either.

Pretend for a moment that roles were a little bit reversed, and most of Europe was actually more ideologically aligned with the US rather than Canada.

Us 'Muricans and all of our like-minded friends in Europe decided to draft an "International Bill of Human rights", and one of the things included was establishing and protecting the right to own a machine gun for self-defense.

Would you want your government to go along with it? (the the answer is a resounding "NO", correct?)

When your country didn't go along with it, and I said to you "What makes Canada so special that they don't have to follow these international rules when all of the rest of us are?", what would your answer to me be?

In just a more basic philosophical sense, the very notion that on a planet of 190+ nations, "international law" is decided/dictated by a select group of delegate judges from 18 countries is an inherently flawed model.

We don’t have to “be friendly” towards other nations, this is true.

The USA is the hegemon in a somewhat unipolar led world. So while we help finance the institutions that that make rules, and sometimes the President even signs them, Congress does not ratify such treaties. Examples abound. Key ones like "the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)UN included. "

The USA also is not a signatory to the International Criminal Court (ICC) So we can kill drug lords with little international consequences. Meanwhile, former President Duterte is on trial now for killing people that dealt drugs in the Philippines. Why because the Philippines signed on to this (They since have rejected it but because it was in force at the time of Duterte's crimes, he is still being held accountable.)

So it is pick and choose. One of the reasons many sign onto agreements is that smaller nations carry less weight and some of the agreements are attractive to help them maintain alliances and be a part of the system. The USA though as the largest economic bloc and contributor does not need such help. The USA is an imposer rather than one being imposed upon.

It is interesting to note that as Putin is wanted for war crimes, he is supposed to be arrested by any those who are in the ICC. Had the USA been a member he would have never gone to Alaska as the USA would have been obligated to arrest him. He did go to mongolia (or some smaller nation) but they still refused to honor their committment to the ICC.

Others flaunt international laws as well. There are still disputed territories and activities that go on all the time.
