I have been very interested in army aviation lately. I have done some research, yet i still have some unanswered questions.

First, how does one go into Army aviation? Through ROTC and then apply to the army? Or do you have to become a Warrant Officer? What exactly is a warrant officer? What is the army looking for in a future pilot? Do you get to decide what type of Helicopter you get to fly? I assume no, but is the decision to fly the type of helicopter you want based on your scores? What is the easiest way to become an apache pilot?
What are the requirements to become an apache pilot?
What should i do right now to prepare to become an apache or comanche pilot?

Thanks

Ok here we go bud.

First, how does one go into Army aviation?

You can go in different ways, enlisted or officer, maintenance or flight ops. Obviously you want to fly. You have to be a Warrant Officer or an Officer, Aviation Warrant Officers can be recruited from civilian or within enlisted ranks through WOFT program. Aviation Officers come in from ROTC and West Point, I have NEVER heard that OCS provides pilots to Army Aviation. OCS (Officer Candidate School) is a commissioning program for active duty enlisted and civilians holding a 4 year college degree. Through West Point and ROTC, AVN is the HARDEST branch to get selected to, expect to be the top of your class.

What exactly is a warrant officer?

Warrant Officers are technical and tactical leaders who specialize, throughout an entire career, in a specific technical area. The Army Warrant Officer Corps comprises less than three percent of the total Army. Although small in size, the level of responsibility is immense and only the very best will be selected to become Warrant Officers. Benefits include extended career opportunities, worldwide leadership assignments, and increased pay and retirement benefits.

So shortly, if you trained to be a pilot as a WO, you will become a pilot and stay a pilot.

What is the army looking for in a future pilot?

Of course the Army is looking some fine individuals who are leaders. It is hard for me to answer this question, a lot of factors come together when selecting a soldier for a flight position. His education, records, evals, physical abilities, awards, etc. The rate of drop-outs from flight school is almost non-existent. They train you to become a pilot.

Do you get to decide what type of Helicopter you get to fly?

In some cases. Depends on the slots open for that specific aircraft. When a class is midway through flight school, the slots will be shared among students, if there are only Chinook slots open, everyone will go Chinook. If there are a few Apaches, some Blackhawks, Kiowas and Chinooks, they will go according to the class standing, class leader can pick one of the Blackhawks and second might pick the Apache, so and so. Apaches come in one or two slots, there would be a million slotts open for Blackhawks and few slots for the rest. So in order to get Apache, better be top of class, that position at least gives you right to speak when the time comes. But they might come up and say "hey y'all going to Kiowa" You have NO SAY in that case! Enjoy.

What is the easiest way to become an apache pilot?

There is no way to become a pilot easy way, preiod. But you are asking what is the preferable route.

You have several options at this point. High School to Flight School! Man you gotta be the best student at your HS for that. No kidding there are some HI SPEED HS graduates are sitting in that Apache cockpit approximately 18 months after graduating HS. Ask you Army recruiter about HS to FS.

Second, of course, USMA at West Point. Third, ROTC, Fourth WOCS from civilian, fifth, joining Army rank as enlisted like I did and then turn in application for WOFT.

What are the requirements to become an apache pilot?

You need to clarify this a little bit bud. If you are top of class at flight school, you will have a say as to what airframe you want to fly. That is the only requirement for the Apache, if you want to learn the requirements to become a pilot in the Army, there are requirements for flight school which applies to everybody, such as to be US citizen, to be 18 to 32, have Secret Clearance, pass Army Physical Fitness Test, etc.

What should i do right now to prepare to become an apache or comanche pilot?

Sorry to be the bearer of BAD NEWS! Comanche Project has been cancelled. To much money has been wasted and the chopper was plagued with failures, unstoppable hydraulic leaks etc.

DO DARN good at HS, graduate with some award. Set the goal, I will become an Apache pilot, head that way, I wish I had decided earlier, I was hopping between Navy and AF before I even had to consider Army until I was 26, I wish I had done it way earlier.

If you become an Apache pilot, you will also be a fine soldier who will know every soldiering skills, not only a pilot.

Great Post. I was a sergeant assigned to a Longbow battalion during the invasion of Iraq. Now Im in ROTC at Texas A&M training to be an infantry officer, but my good friend is going for Army aviation and the above post sounds pretty accurate as far as what I have heard. When you get to Fort Lewis for two weeks during your senior year of ROTC you will be evaluated and then it will be determined which of your three choices you put down you would be best suited for... if any, becoming an officer isn't a guarantee.

Great Post.

Thanks, since 2003 I am working on my goal towards, so I keep current on WOFT information...

I was a sergeant assigned to a Longbow battalion during the invasion of Iraq.

67R? 68Y?

Did you tour in Korea? I need some information on assignment on the way back after your year is done.

No it's not me, its a picture I took of one of the pilots. I was stationed at Hunter Army Airfield at Fort Stewart Georgia with 1/3 AVN Battalion of the 3rd Infantry Division. The first LongBow Battalion to fire a shot in anger actually beginning the ground war in Iraq with the destruction of the OP's on the Kuwaiti boarder to make way for the tanks and infantry.

Duh, harness, desert tan flight suit, wasn't paying enough attention to the dude I guess.

You have pic of Yankees loading up the hellfire there, were you a yankee also?

And that rolled over bird, seems like it happened on or near base, was it a brown out situation, anyone got hurt?

No I wasn't a yankee but I worked with alot of yankee's in that unit and so I helped load and fuel sometimes. That bird that flipped over wasn't near a base, it was a objective called objective rams about 100 miles from Baghdad. We had to stop there due to the sandstorm with the rest of the Third Infantry Division. Anyway, the real problem out there as far as the helicopters are concerned is that when they take off and when they land in the open desert, they can't see anything, because all the sand kicks up, they can't see the ground or their fellow pilots to their left and right. We only lost one Bird to combat and it was a black hawk in the Karbala Gap. In this particular wreck an apache was coming in for a landing and nearly crashed into another apache, to avoid that, the pilot rolled the thing over. It sounded like someone dropping a piano off the empire state building I was sure their would be KIA but both pilots walked out unscathed.

AFAIK, Yankees don't fuel, I am sure they help but we don't do it over here, and yes the situation what you described me is a brown out ... I wonder if the bird was repairable. Heard them for the first time shoot some 2.75" FFAR and the gun during MPRC here. They didn't shoot any hellfire, I am sure that is way loud, we were able to hear the birds from miles away when they shot those rockets and fired the gun.

Hey bud, nice meeting you, good luck being an infantry officer, are there any particular routes you want to follow after that?

You won't find out unless you try. Showing off resumes on military websites to ask if one can make it is the most annoying thing and lately those kind of threads started to be closed and deleted.

Would you really believe if I told you "you wouldn't be selected, you stand no chance" I don't think so. There are PFCs got picked probably with nothing under their belt. WO Selection board considers the total soldier aspect. They look for a person who can really make through the training and stay Army. I don't think they care about your GPA of your 60 credits.

Pretty much like that in all military aviation. It's just the luck of the draw what the situation is when you're in flight school.

My own personal goal is USAF OTS after I finish my degree... but I've also looked heavily into Army WOCS and am keeping it in the pocket as a backup option :)

Wow, it has certainly been a while(8 months) since I posted this. It's funny how I didn't know the answers to some of my questions.

I have decided to go into Naval ROTC and either become a pilot, intelligence officer, or a navigator.ButI may not go into the military, and try to get into medical school. I am leaning towards a career in the military, though.

They will also consider your abilities and desires, it is not entirely luck, it is also what you put into it.

You can go fighter track but due to motion sickness issues you can't get over, or a repeated G-Loc, you can be sent to transport track.

My own personal goal is USAF OTS after I finish my degree...

I would suggest ROTC. Getting selected to OTS is a real challenge, high GPA required, but not impossible of course. That was my goal also. Now aiming for WOCS.
