• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"Although each person seems separate and independent, all of us are connected to patterns of intelligence that govern the whole cosmos. Our bodies are part of a universal body; our minds an aspect of the universal mind."

"Individualization and good self-esteem begins when we start to look inside ourselves for answers, when we stop blaming others for our problems ans feelings---and begin relating to our emotions and intuition as teachers---that we have soemthing to learn here."

Philip Kavanaugh

"Recognizing our own responsibility and need to stop blaming others is the first step toward dismantling the culture [ of blame and abuse policies and] of victimation. This does not mean suspending the search for justice, but it does mean we should strive for a moratorium on the politics of blame.

Our civil rights are not necessarily best protected by endlessly extending defintions of oppression [predudice, stigma and blame] and discovering new classes of vicitms. The weight of the law should be brought to bear against individual acts of discrimination rather than be used to create blanket group entitlements. So, too, our attention should [also] be directed toward helping the genuinely handicapped rather than expanding the categories of disability. Lawyers should remain skeptical---as well as juries should remain skeptical of any creative attempts to further redefine aberrant conduct as psychological infirmity.

"Stripped of its pretensions---"victimization" or "the politics of blame" is an ideology of the ego, an impulse [if not coercive force] to deny personal responsibility and to obsess on one's grievances by stressing self-expression over self-control. Like the sulking teen who insists, "It's not fair," the "eternal victim" is voicing the conviction that the world exists [soley] to supply his or her immediate needs or desires."

"Holding people responsible for their behaviors means....recreating the moral contract---with its power to dish out opprobrium---[which] gives back to the poor an essential weapon in the struggle against despair and decline."

"A recent conference on urban poverty underscored the paralysis to which vicitmization leads. Local businesses blamed the schools for the quality of the graduates; the schools blamed the parents; the parents blamed the schools; both blamed institutionalized racism; social workers blamed the business people; clergymen blamed MTV. They agreed on one thing: they could not do anything to improve the lives of their neighbors, unless the others fixed their own problems."

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive."

C.S.Lewis

"If we can't think for ourselves, if we're unwilling to question authority, then we're just putty in the hands of those in power. But if the citizens are educated and form their own opnions, then those in power work for us. In every country, we should be teaching our children the scientific method and the reasons for the Bill of Rights. With it comes a certain decency, humility, and community spirit. In the "Demon-Haunted World" we inhabit by virtue of being human, this may be all that stands between us and the enveloping darkness."

Carl Sagan "The Demon-Haunted World: Science As A Candle in the Dark":

p1977_23.jpg

"Finding the occasional straw of truth awash in the great ocean of bamboozle requires intelligence, vigilence, dedication and courage. But if we don't practice these tough habits of thought, we cannot hope to solve truely serious problems that face us---and we risk becoming a nation of suckers---up for grabs---by the next charlatan that comes along...."

Carl Sagan

"One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we have been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. The bamboozle has captured us. Its simply too painful to acknowledge--even to ourselves---that we've been so credulous. (So the old bamboozles tend to persist as the new bamboozles arise.)

Car Sagan

"The politicians---the religious leaders----the weapons scientists have been at it for a long time and they've made a thorough mess of it. I mean, we're in deep trouble."

"The suppression of uncomfortable ideas may be common in religion or politics, but it is not the path to knowledge, and there's no place for it in the endeavor of science....We do not know beforehand where fundamental insight will arise from our mysterious and lovely solar system. The history of our study of our solar system show us clearly that accepted and conventional ideas are often wrong, and that fundamental insights can arise from the most unexpected sources."

Carl Sagan

"A sense of smell is of less imortance than a sense of balance....
The wind has its own level to find..."

Emerson

"His gossips are the stars, and the moon his tavern;
He who seeks a better find it if he can---
And I his sweet pillow in the ferny cavern!
Happy the man."

Richard le Galliene, Beatus Vir

"One of the best ways of enslaving a people is to keep them from education. The second way of enslaving a people, is to suppress the sources of information, not only by burning books, but by controlling the ways in which ideas are transmitted."

Eleanor Roosevelt

"In the constellation of cygnus
There lurks a mysterious, invisible force
The black hole
Of Cygnusx-1

Six stars of the northern cross
In the mourning for their sister's loss
In a final flash of glory
Nevermore to grace the night..."

Rush Lyric

The Christian mystic arrives, against all odds and dangers....

"Discovering spirituality is like discovering you are in a boat. Mysticism is like pushing off from the deck. Since many leave safe mooring and perish in the waves, this is not done in a cavalier fahion---even though it can be exciting to push off into the deep. The issue is not whether we should push off, for Christians must do so if they intend to get anywhere ( and that is what boats are for ), but rather where you are going...The Christian casts off from this world as well, but with a clear intent to where he is headed, with the best of maps, circumspectly, deliberately.
The Christian Mystic arrives, against all odds and dangers.
Thus we launch out with fear and trembling, but trust that He who commanded us to do so, can calm the waves, and see us through to his real safe port."

C.S. Lewis

"Legacy 22" Thomas Brooks

"Record all special favors, mercies, providences, and experiences. It is true, a man should do nothing else, should he record all the favours and experiences of God towards him; and therefore my legacy is, record all special favours, peculiar experiences. Little do you know the advantage that will increase to your soul upon this account, by recording all the experiences of the Shining of His Face, and of the leading of His Spirit.

Many a Christian loseth much by neglecting this duty."

"A TRUECONTEMPLATIVE IS NOT THE ONE WHO PREPARES HIS MIND FOR A PARTICULAR MESSAGE THAT HE WANTS OR EXPECTS TO HEAR; BUT WHO REMAINS EMPTY BECAUSE HE KNOWS THAT HE CAN NEVER EXPECT OR ANTICIPATE THE WORD THAT WILL TRANSFORM HIS DARKNESS INTO LIGHT."
