The question is this: was everyone before Augustine actually an arminian? I have my huge doubts about that one. So, either way, nobody knows. As my comment from above is, all that we know is that Paul, Peter, James, Jude, John, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and every other author in the bible were calvinists. This not to mention God Himself, in all three persons of the trinity :D.

IMO, When I hear 'arminian' I think of those who believe man is responsible for his own choice in achieving salvation.

I think of 'calvinism' as those who believe they were regenerated by God's great mercy and grace and by that thirst for Him were justified by faith, a gift from Him and sanctified to life everlasting in Him.

I loved the analogy of this in todays blog by DrSteve! Great thoughts there!

bit hard given Calvin wasn't born yet. they may have had the same theology about salvation, but they weren't calvinists.

So drsteve blogs!

It seems that providence is playing with me today. Earlier, I read the almost same thing from Horton as I was researching how to answer a fellow Presbyterian who proposed the idea of ongoing justification. After reflection, I think I'll have to disagree as what he is talking about is what is mentioned in the blog as Sanctification.

when Augustine came along he debated the heretic Pelagius; if Pelagianism was seen as a heresy needing a power theologian to put it down, and if semi Pelagianism (Arminianism) didn't come along till hundreds of years later when Calvin's nemesis Arminius was doin' his thang, then i think it is impossible that anyone before Augustine was anything but Biblical Christians: Calvinists.

But that's just a guess based on human logic, feel free to accept or reject it :D

Actually. . .I think that one might argue reasonable that they were Calvinists. Calling one a Calvinist doesn't necessarily mean that one is a follower of John Calvin. Calling oneself a Calvinist merely means that you hold to the Doctrines of Grace. Thus, anyone from anytime who believed in the Doctrines of Grace was a Calvinist (this includes Jesus, Paul, and Peter!;) ).
