I think the evangelicals were important, but probably a bit overstated. Democrats didn't do well with working class whites in those crucial midwest states either. Many of these were historically union heavy areas, who have seen their way of life slowly destroyed. Democrats haven't listened as much as Republicans. Many Dems in general were also Catholic as well, but the DNC is just going to alienate them when it's hostile to pro-life views.
