I have a tattoo and I dont think it is wrong, by any means but I just want to get other peoples input on the issue.

CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I believe Leviticus 19:28 is pretty clear on that. Some argue that that was referring to pagan culture and such, however, the current culture that tattoos seems to be the criminal element. I've heard it said that if you're body is the temple of the Lord, than a tattoo is like graffiti. Hmm, interesting comparison.

Wrong? Only to some employers. That's why most people of the area reccomend tattos to not be so big, or in any place that stays always uncovered (hands and neck, for instance).

Yes. Tattoos in those times were commonly used to signify political/religious affiliation. It's no wonder that the Old Testament prohibits believers from getting tattoos that would signify their affiliation with pagan nations/religions.TwinCrier said:

Ok, I see where you're coming from. Obviously, people shouldn't get gang tattoos. That's just common sense. But I don't see anything wrong with someone getting a tattoo purely for recreational/aesthetic reasons.Sojourner1 said:

you'll have to check with a Rabbi on this, however... as i've had it explained to me the prohibition for tattoos was strictly to do with death.
Lev prohibited, iirc, the application of tats for those that have died, that is all. the point was to help the survivors reconcile their beloveds death and to help them overcome their attachment to the memory of the deceased.
again... my knowledge of these matters is derived from Jewish sources, so consulting a Rabbi is the way to go.

Just ink on your skin, as long as it doesnt represent anything bad. Also remember that the old law was done away, so we are no longer burdened by the law in Leviticus.

I think if you have a tattoo (funny word isn't it) and it says "I love Mary" and your wifes name is Jill , then yes Tattoos can be wrong

Yeah, it's not really different from the cultural and personal identity used with clothing. I think a lot of young ones are doing that to identify themselves as a generation. Much like love beads or saying far out and groovy man. Somebodies already mentioned what tattooes were in the ancient times, signs of criminals and slaves. Not a group you would want to be associated with back in the day. And that the old laws were all wrong and thrown out by a revolutionary named Jesus. However, in tribal societies it has always been used as a mark of individuality like everybody else kind of thing. A lot of military personnel, particularly sailors used that tattoo marking their military service back in the 40s too.

Salvation doesn't come becuase we look right. Salvation is more than physical- (spiritual). Anyhow- about that verse- "the temple" Paul is not talking about bodily markings or anything, but about sexual promiscuity.
The old testament law is not necissarily applicable today, which is why Christ came with the new law- whole nother discussion. Anyhow, There isn't anything wrong with tattoos, as long as you arent sporting something stupid or crude.

Those who are caught up in this kind of legalism are dangerous.

I have a butterful right on my lower back. its about the size of a half dollar. i dont see anything wrong with it, but if my mom knew she would have a heart attack!
