He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 1 John 2:4
Do you understand what the phase
“I know Him” refers to?
Hello ThatCanadianDude, great to meet you here and welcome.
Thanks for your thoughts on the topic here. Jesus is indeed our example in all things. He is the living WORD of God. Jesus is the creator of heaven and earth and he has given us the gift of his written WORD in the bible. As Christians we are to LIVE BY EVERY WORD that proceeds out of the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4). You cannot have the Gospel without the LAW both are God's WORD and the one leads to the other as it is wrttien,
MATTHEW 9:12-13, [12], But when Jesus heard that, he said to them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. [13], But go you and learn what that means, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
You cannot know sin without God's LAW because God's LAW gives us a knowledge of what sin is (Romans 3:4; Romans 7:7; James 2:11)
If you have no knowledge of what sin is then you have no need of a Saviour
If you have no need of a Saviour you have no salvation
If you have no salvation you are lost because you are still in your sins.
As Timothy has said...
1 TIMOTHY 1:8 [8] But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully
God's LAW is the mirror and teacher that shows us our need of Christ that we might be justified by faith and re-made into his image and walk as he walked in his Spirit, to LOVE as he first LOVED us.
We are not saved by the LAW. Christ saves us by FAITH to LOVE and LOVE is the fruit of OBEDIENCE to God's LAW in those who BELIEVE his WORD. This is the NEW COVENANT promise (Hebrews 8:10-12; Matthre 22:36-40; Romans 13:8-10; Romans 3:31; 1 John 3:3-10). This is why Jesus says to all those who BELEIVE and FOLLOW Him; IF you love me keep my commandments (John 14:15)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts TCD it was a good read.
May God bless you as you seek him through his WORD
Where does it say the 10 commandments are/were "applied to our hearts"? May you give me a scripture reference pleaseThe 10 Commandments are a Requirement of Christians today in the aspect, they were never done away with.
The Requirement aspect of the 10 Commandments with regard to the Christian, a Christians Salvation is not dependent upon the keeping of them, having had them Fulfilled and then Applied to our heart, we in essence have kept them In Christ.
Our Salvation is by Grace through Faith, not in the keeping of the Law.
We are dead to the Law of Sin and Death.
Read post 92 #.
1Jn 2:3
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
1Jn 2:4
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
1Jn 2:5
But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
1Jn 2:6
He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
So how do you handle Hebrews 8?
Loving is the force behind upholding the law....
Agreed, I explained the meaning in another post. The Law is not the source but course of salvation. Yet we don't keep the law by trying to keep it.... The tree is made good so that it naturally bares good fruit.
Another words when the heart is made right the deeds naturally follow.
Which means if we are good we do not think of doing bad...If we do not think of doing bad then one naturally upholds the Law.
Sabbath keepings all fall under the law of works. Jesus didn't just die for part of divisions of the Law. He died for all transgression of the Law.
So Hebrews responds that those who cease from their works have entered His rest.
So How do we cease from our works to obtain salvation ? By Grace through Faith.
Where does it say the 10 commandments are/were "applied to our hearts"? May you give me a scripture reference please
Thanks for taking the time to reply, helped me to better understand where you are coming from. I am in agreement with what you are sharing, I just wanted to emphasize the new covenant and how it relates to the law. You shared some scriptures I will definitely reflect on.
God Bless

The way to act in accordance with God's righteousness is dependant upon His righteousness, not on a particular covenant. For example, it will always be righteous to help the poor no matter how many covenants God makes, so any instructions that God has ever given for how to practice righteousness will always be valid no matter which covenant we are under as long as God's righteousness remains eternal, but as part of the New Covenant we are told that those who do not follow those instructions are not children of God (1 John 3:10). If the way to act in accordance with God's righteousness changed when the New Covenant was made, then God's righteousness would not be eternal. So while the Mosaic Covenant has become obsolete, God's eternal righteousness and eternal instructions for how to act in accordance with His righteousness did not become obsolete along with it.
You seem to be saying that covenants don't matter.
The old covenant did not provide everlasting life. If it had, there would not have been a need for a new covenant that does.
Obedience to God is the most important when you read His Word cover to cover. The other day I told my wife we would see all walks of doctrine in Heaven because God knows who loves him and who loves self more. Death is not the end of life but the beginning of an eternal walk in Eden with our Creator and the Word is about addressing the many different kinds of people that the future would present. The very next Sunday at church, my wife looked at me and smiled. The pastor's sermon was about what I said. Obedience..., that is the epitome of Love to our Lord. That He gave His only begotten Son was the most complete sign He could give to how much He loves us.Hi marineimaging, nice to meet you here.
Nice post. Yes when God's people entered the Land of Egypt and became slaves for 400 years they had pretty much forgotten a lot of the ways of God. I see this as a kind of Shadow in that Egypt to us today can represent God's people being in the World. God is calling us out of the World to have a closer walk with him. We need to be in the world but not of the World. Breaking all of God's Commandment is what those do who do not KNOW GOD (1 JOHN 2:3-4; 1 John 3:3-10) It is OBEDIENCE by FAITH in God's WORD alone by walking in God's Spirit that shows the world that we are not of the World.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts here marineimaging,
