Thanks for your thoughts Kenith. I read the early church fathers some (I own this set) but dont look to them to interpret scriptures for me i look to the Holy Spirit, and as such believe that historic baptists come closest to the apostolic christians. Regarding baptism I have yet to read an explicit/descriptive, or implicit text in the New Testament, that either John's baptism or the new covenant baptism was by flicking water on an infants face. In every instance bapto/immerse was administered after conversion.

Hey PB,

We have the same sets of books on the Church Fathers. I love them!!!

I don't use them to interpret Scripture either, and I can't think of a Protestant that would use them for that purpose. Scripture is to interpret Scripture for us and we are to depend on the Holy Spirit in our use and understanding of the Word of God.

We have discussed Baptism (mode and who is to be baptised) a few times over the years. I am sure it will happen again soon enough.

Coram Deo,
Kenith

Hey PB,

I treasure them as well :) Can you believe it, 8 volumes on Augustines writings alone, and 6 on Chrysostom's. We are blessed in this time in history to have such a massive collection on early church writings and not cost a kings ransom. I was able to get my hands on this set as well, really good work on the swiss and german reformations.

Apologies to the OP for a small off topic contribution from one Spurgeon fan to another :) A few of his earlier sermons and writings that aren't at CCEL are available unabridged, zipped, and in pdf: Sermons of Charles Spurgeon

Hello Brothers,

I am a young Presby. I had a hard time between choosing with either side. I am convinced that by pure exegesis that both sides can make an argument. The biggest sway for me to go to the Presby/Reformed side is church history. I cannot make an argument for Credobaptism on that point. Either way, I have very high respect for Covenantal Baptists, a church near me where a friend of mine goes is an amazing Baptist church which holds to 1689 London Baptist Confession of faith. I would easly go there( and I visit) if it were not for my paedo convictions.

What is it you guys like about Spurgeon?
I like the fact that God raised up Spurgeon in a time when the preaching of the gospel was at a very low ebb. I like the fact that Mr. Spurgeon was a brilliant man who had no education and that he stood firm on the truths of the Gospel. Especially in his younger years. I have learned by reading his writings a great deal of what it is to preach the Gospel without compromising the truth of the sovereignty of God in salvation. Like all men of history he was a product of his time and must be understood in the context of his time. While there are some things I would disagree with him on I take them as I come to them and overlook his failings in those things just as I do other men. It cannot be disputed that he was a man raised up by God for his time and used of God in this time.
