Baptists come in all shades. My husband is more on the free will side on the house while I am very definitely calvinistic. My brother in law an my sister who are also Baptists are free will Baptists. Even within a single congregation you will find many shades of belief on this.
There are what's known as General Baptists, who are mainly in the lower midwest and upper-southern states. Officially, their doctrinal stance does affirm the existence of Original Sin and Total Depravity, as does the FWB. Much like Calvinism's "Perseverance of the Saints" is popularly diluted to "once saved always saved", OS & TD tend to be misunderstood and weakened in the pews in both FWB and GB.
Nope we are split right down the middle I think. My husband and I are but our pastor of our SBC church is not. We still love our pastor and still agree with the vision and ministry. But we disagree with a few of his sermons lol. We don't let it divide us my husband and I will just talk about the differences in what we believe when we get home in private.
It’s the opposite with my family. I was raised Arminian (now a Calvinist), but my Arminian mom and stepdad go to a church with a Calvinist pastor, and their disagreement on that area doesn’t stop them from fellowshiping and worshiping in the same church.
For 45 years I attended a Baptist Church, and I think I am still a Baptist at heart.
But I had never heard of Calvinism or Arminianism until about 15 years ago. Personally, I think
that is good. Too much attention to the "isms" and too little attention to Christ and the word of God.
Read your Bible; Pray for the Unsaved; Spread the Gospel; Make sure your Life Matches what you Believe; Attend a Bible Believing Church. Pretty sure if your are doing the above, everything else will take care of itself. It's OK to debate these things, just don't let it get in the way with your walk with Christ.
