  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Arcade games?

Hey,
just wondering what your opinions of the arcade games here are?
They are mostly about killing aliens, which seems to teach intolerance, or about acquiring "cheese" or other material possessions. Would you prefer your child to be playing more faith-based games? And would you let your child play these arcade games?

Just curious.

When I pop my head in a video arcade, most the games I see are full of really sexy looking chicks, lots of blood and gore, and some demonic looking stuff to boot.

Keeping in mind that the Christian life IS a war, and there IS a lot of (invisible) blood and gore, and a lot of demonic stuff, and even some sexy looking chicks--heehee--I still don't think I'm all that hot on arcade games.

I prefer the kind that one can choose--at home. If video games are to be played, at least mom and dad can help choose the kind that they think are appropriate. When at an arcade, one can't really choose--at home, there is some specific options.

There are some really really really sick games out there right now. I'd just be careful. Good fighting evil is one thing. But a lot of today's games are more of an 'bad' fighting 'badder.' And there's a lot of sick demonic stuff involved (my husband is a youth pastor, so I get to see some of the young men's 'favorites'), some pre-porn action (do you see the way those girls are dressed and the way their bodies are shaped on those games???) and other stuff that is just plain NOT healthy for the eyeballs of ANYONE.

My 2 Cents!
Blessings,
Molly

I think the OP was referring to the arcade games here at CF. Or at least that's how I read it. As far as the REAL arcade games, yes, I'd agree with you about most of those. No way would I let my little ones loose in an arcade these days.

We have a Nintendo Gamecube and our 6 year old plays games like Super Mario, Finding Nemo, and Scooby Doo. And she doesn't play games on a daily basis...maybe 2 or 3 times a week. Unless Mom and Dad hijack the controllers and want to challenge each other, lol...then it's just a fun family activity for all of us. But, we're pretty careful about the games we buy for her. There is definitely some pretty inappropriate things going on in MANY of them on the market today.

I posted a thread about PC games for my 6 yo. I'm not mad about arcades as I feel there is no control about what games they will get to. Too tempting to get to the demonic/sexy type stuff if the peers are doing it. Plus the safety thing of who else hangs around there.

I also always get the feel that they are preparing people for casiono's or similar places. The dark, noisy, glittzy look and feel of them (my personal opinion)!

But I dont mind putting a game I've vetted onto the PC or Sega for my kids - even if it means a larger outlay of cash for a strategy game like Age of Empires / a fun game like the Lego Rock Raiders or some of the educational type games (Yellow School Bus).

But the games themselves I think can aid in hand - eye co ordination; thought processes ; new skills (number recognition / new vocabulary) etc. But they can not be the only source of input - just like too much TV is not good - but controlled & measured amounts can be fine.
