  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I posted this in the parenting forum, but there aren't many people viewing there, so i thought I'd ask here too as it kind of relates:

Hey,
just wondering what your opinions of the arcade games here are?
They are mostly about killing aliens, which seems to teach intolerance, or about acquiring "cheese" or other material possessions. Would you prefer your child to be playing more faith-based games? And would you let your child play these arcade games?

Just curious.

Overall I think computer games are a good thing, however I do have strong concerns about violence in games e.g games like Grand theft auto , mortal combat etc. I feel it somewhat desensitises people playing these games.

I think it's starting to become more of a issue as the technology behind these games is accelerating faster then society can digest. It's becoming more of a case of build it first, think/debate the consequences later. In any case if I did have kids, I would certainly monitor what type of games they played just as I would monitor what movies they watched.

But surely you shouldn't have to monitor game playing on a Christian Message board! Killing aliens would be wrong, even something like chess is 50/50, as it encourages black vs white fighting.
Hey I like you already! Write on and expect oppesition. Keep your no comprimise attitude!(with evil that is, of course.) God bless you!

I respectfully posit that the use of "blessings" to pay for the arcades may be a function
of the forum code, so it may not be something they can turn off or expunge. As far
as the games, I don't have a problem with them, but I don't use them chiefly since
other sites are out there with better games.

Je-Unit, intolerance is a good thing to be taught.
Many problems of the world today are only around because people have grown tolerant. They tolerate error, tolerate vice, tolerate everything.
But when it comes to correction, when it comes to punishment, then intolerance is everywhere.
Kids shouldn't be taught what is true, they should arrive at their "own truth"; criminals should not be punished, they should be "educated".

It is this kind of irrational tolerant worldview one of the causes the moral bankruptcy of our society.

Furthermore, every game has an objective. If instead of cheese, the objective of the game was to collect "faith", or "love", would it be any different? No.
It would still be as competitive. And no-one would leave it anymore faithful or imbued with love for their fellow man.

You are proving yourself to be victim to some of the dire consequences of our tolerant, liberal times. How so? Even chess you consider a questionable game, because it encourages "fights" of "blacks against whites". Believe me, this is pure lunacy.
Games are competitive, and they help kids stimulate their intelligence with challenges. And kids reap only benefits from playing chess, one of the most complex and intelligent games ever made. So, unless the boy has ceased to care about life to devote his time to chess, there is no reason to worry.

It's okay to zap pixels. They don't believe in God the way we do.

You know, oif course, that MARIO BROS. and GRAND THEFT AUTO are exactly the same game, just different graphics and sound effects, right?

I disagree. Is it okay to "zap" other things that don't believe in God the way we do, like Atheists or Muslims? No it's not.

The idea of the games seems to be to attack anything that looks strange to us, not very tolerant!

Also, I think the blessings gamble wouldn't be a built in feature of the forum, it would have to be set by the mods.

Ah, but they're not "things," they're energy that symbolize things.

That's why I like DEAD OR ALIVE VOLLEYBALLY so much -- nobody gets hurt or killed and you win by making friends, exchanging presents, and frolicing on the beach.

I also like SPLASHDOWN and SSX snowboarding 'cuz they're about doing stunts in exotic locations.

Something I just saw on the Gamers forum: Someone asked for a "cheat" for a game. Even if playing the game (it was GTA) is morally acceptable, is it not sinful to persue a goal using dishonest means?
A cheat unlocks levels without having to play them, or else unlocks secret levels, or enables one to change aspects of the game. For example, in the GODZILLA: DESTROY ALL MONSTERS game you can either spend hours and hours playing every level to unlock all the monsters, or you can use the cheats to make them all accessible and up your own power/invuilnerability.

Now, if you like playing a game because you enjoy beating each level poatiently, nothing stops you from doing so. If, like me, you just wanna put the Big G and his pals through a slugfest in every major city of the world, you use the cheats.

To me, a game is just fun. Whatever i play on a computer or console just simply does not reflect reality.

In real life my actions/reactions would be different, to reflect my reality. It would be based on my christian beleifs. Of course if an alien DID come to this planet, and for some strange reason it talked to me, i wouldnt shoot it on the spot. (unless it tried to kill me first!)

Besides if there are aliens didnt God make them just as he made us? This is a topic i have seeing lately that aliens are actually demons etc etc.....one that speaks to me as daft - maybe some so called sightings are demon enduced, but i dont think aliens would come here anyway if they could, the human race is so messed up!

Personally i think if there are any, they'll be good or bad like us, and maybe God will have revealed himself to them just like us! (or some may be decieved by satan just like us.)

anyway....back to reality..... (oh, the internet  )
