Exactly what qualifies one as an apostle?

Why was the church in Corinth the seal of Paul’s apostleship?

1 Cor 9:1-2 Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord? If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

From Eph 4:11 apostles are still part of the NT church, but in what capacity?

Eph 4:11 And He gave some {as} apostles, and some {as} prophets, and some {as} evangelists, and some {as} pastors and teacher.

Is there a unique combination of gifts that is provide with the office?

Are there any real apostles active in the church body today?

In the book of Hebrew, it talks about the great apostle, Christ. You know what apostle means? "Sent one," and after Christ, and you would say Christ is capital APOSTLE, as the Great ‘APOSTLE’.

Then you have the twelve, they are ‘Apostles.’

Then you have Andronicus, Junias and the whole bunch--Barnabas, and they are 'apostle' which means a broad word, is like "servant," "sent one."

From: Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology: Apostle
Apostles and the Spirit The primary function of the apostles was to witness to Christ. The Twelve had intimate knowledge of his life, and a wider group had been witnesses to his resurrection. Their commissioning by the risen Lord to worldwide witness (Ac 1:8), however, was incomplete without the anointing of the Spirit. Only after Pentecost were they empowered by the Spirit for their ministry of word and deed. Their witness to Christ was not only empowered, but also guided and validated by the Spirit (John 14:26). Thus, their full apostolic vocation was realized only in the Spirit (John 14-17). Paul viewed apostleship as a gift of the Spirit (1 Co 12:28), which was often accompanied by miraculous signs and mighty works (2 Co 12:12). Such signs and wonders, however, were clearly secondary to the apostolic functions of preaching and teaching. Apostolic Authority Having direct knowledge of the incarnate Word, and being sent out as authorized agets of the gospel, the apostles provided the authentic interpretation of the life and teaching of Jesus. Because their witness to Christ was guided by the Spirit (John 15:26-27), the apostles' teaching was considered normative for the church. They were regarded as the "pillars" (Gal 2:9) and "foundation" (Eph 2:20; cf. Rev 21:14) of the church, and their teaching became the norm for Christian faith and practice. The deposit of revelation transmitted by the apostles and preserved in its written form in the New Testament thus forms the basis of postapostolic preaching and teaching in the church. Paul uses the word "apostle" in more than one sense. At times he employs the term in the broader sense of messenger or agent (2 Col 8:23; Php 2:25). More often, however, Paul uses the term to refer to those who had been commissioned by the risen Lord to the apostolic task. Included in this category are the Twelve (although he never explicitly applies the title of apostle to them as a group), Peter (Gal 1:18), Paul himself (Rom 1:1; 1 Col 1:1; 9:1-2; 15:8-10; Gal 2:7-8), James the brother of Jesus (Gal 1:19; cf. Acts 15:13), Barnabas (1 Col 9:1-6; Gal 2:9; cf. Acts 14:4, 14), and possibly others (Ro 16:7). In addition to understanding apostleship in terms of its basis in a divine call, Paul views the life of an apostle as being one of self-sacrificial service that entails suffering (1 Col 4:9-13; 15:30-32; 2 Col 4:7-12; 11:23-29).

i suppose if you want to know what an apostle was in the new testament, it would be as the last post pointed out, i.e. someone sent out after having been privacy to all jesus did.

but that's not going to happen now.... so best defintion of apostle.... missionary

I inserted all of the referenced Bible verses in the quote from the Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology

"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
Thus, their full apostolic vocation was realized only in the Spirit (John 14-17). {that is} the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, {but} you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. Paul viewed apostleship as a gift of the Spirit (1 Co 12:28), And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, {various} kinds of tongues. which was often accompanied by miraculous signs and mighty works (2 Co 12:12). The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with all perseverance, by signs and wonders and miracles. Such signs and wonders, however, were clearly secondary to the apostolic functions of preaching and teaching. Apostolic Authority Having direct knowledge of the incarnate Word, and being sent out as authorized agents of the gospel, the apostles provided the authentic interpretation of the life and teaching of Jesus. Because their witness to Christ was guided by the Spirit (John 15:26-27), "When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, {that is} the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me, and you {will} testify also, because you have been with Me from the beginning. the apostles' teaching was considered normative for the church. They were regarded as the "pillars" (Gal 2:9) and recognizing the grace that had been given to me, James and Cephas and John, who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, so that we {might} {go} to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. and "foundation" (Eph 2:20; having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner {stone,} cf. Rev 21:14) And the wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them {were} the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. of the church, and their teaching became the norm for Christian faith and practice. The deposit of revelation transmitted by the apostles and preserved in its written form in the New Testament thus forms the basis of post apostolic preaching and teaching in the church. Paul uses the word "apostle" in more than one sense. At times he employs the term in the broader sense of messenger or agent (2 Col 8:23; As for Titus, {he is} my partner and fellow worker among you; as for our brethren, {they are} messengers of the churches, a glory to Christ. Php 2:25). But I thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger and minister to my need; More often, however, Paul uses the term to refer to those who had been commissioned by the risen Lord to the apostolic task. Included in this category are the Twelve (although he never explicitly applies the title of apostle to them as a group), Peter (Gal 1:18), Then three years later I went up to Jerusalem to become acquainted with Cephas, and stayed with him fifteen days But I did not see any other of the apostles except James, the Lord's brother. Paul himself (Rom 1:1; Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called {as} an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 1 Col 1:1; Paul, called {as} an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, 9:1-2; Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord? If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. 15:8-10; and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also For I am the least of the apostles, and not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me. Gal 2:7-8), But on the contrary, seeing that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter {had been} to the circumcised (for He who effectually worked for Peter in {his} apostleship to the circumcised effectually worked for me also to the Gentiles), James the brother of Jesus (Gal 1:19; But I did not see any other of the apostles except James, the Lord's brother. cf. Acts 15:13), After they had stopped speaking, James answered, saying, "Brethren, listen to me. Barnabas (1 Col 9:5-6; Do we not have a right to take along a believing wife, even as the rest of the apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? Or do only Barnabas and I not have a right to refrain from working? Gal 2:9; and recognizing the grace that had been given to me, James and Cephas and John, who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, so that we {might} {go} to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. cf. Acts 14:4, But the people of the city were divided; and some sided with the Jews, and some with the apostles. 14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore their robes and rushed out into the crowd, crying out), and possibly others (Ro 16:7 Greet Andronicus and Junias, my kinsmen and my fellow prisoners, who are outstanding among the apostles, who also were in Christ before me.). In addition to understanding apostleship in terms of its basis in a divine call, Paul views the life of an apostle as being one of self-sacrificial service that entails suffering (1 Col 4:9-13; For, I think, God has exhibited us apostles last of all, as men condemned to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are prudent in Christ; we are weak, but you are strong; you are distinguished, but we are without honor. To this present hour we are both hungry and thirsty, and are poorly clothed, and are roughly treated, and are homeless; and we toil, working with our own hands; when we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure; when we are slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become as the scum of the world, the dregs of all things, {even} until now. 15:30-32; Why are we also in danger every hour? I affirm, brethren, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. If from human motives I fought with wild beasts at Ephesus, what does it profit me? If the dead are not raised, LET US EAT AND DRINK, FOR TOMORROW WE DIE. 2 Col 4:7-12; But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; {we are} afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. For we who live are constantly being delivered over to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death works in us, but life in you. 11:23-29 Are they servants of Christ?--I speak as if insane--I more so; in far more labors, in far more imprisonments, beaten times without number, often in danger of death. Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine {lashes.} Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent in the deep. {I have been} on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from {my} countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers on the sea, dangers among false brethren; {I have been} in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. Apart from {such} external things, there is the daily pressure on me {of} concern for all the churches. Who is weak without my being weak? Who is led into sin without my intense concern?).

I think the Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology is incorrect. Apostolic Authority Having direct knowledge of the incarnate Word, and being sent out as authorized agents of the gospel, the apostles provided the authentic interpretation of the life and teaching of Jesus. Because their witness to Christ was guided by the Spirit.

They are saying that only direct knowledge of the teachings of Jesus qualifies one as an apostle.

I disagree. All the other offices of Eph 4:11 are for the church today, so this one is also.

I disagree. I don't have "direct knowledge" of God's Word except the Word of God which is the Bible. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 12:28 says, "And God hath set some in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers;....... In Ephesians 4:11-12 says, "And He gave some, apostles;....." They are official titles -- special ministries. Divine Appointment.

Ephesians 4:7 says, "But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ." Every one of us has received the gift, the divine enablement, the divine endowment, the divine capacity to minister to the body in a unique way commensurate with our personality.

We all have the gift. The Greek word for "gift" is dorea. It refers to a free gift, with the stress on "free." It is not emphasizing so much the quality or the character of the gift as it is its gratuitous nature. We have all received a supernatural, spiritual, free gift.

All believers do receive giftings. But not all believers are to be the church leaders. The apostles, prophets, pastors and teachers are provided to lead and equip the believers - the church body.

If I recall, the count was 23.
24 if you count Matthias.
Could you list them? I count 12, with Paul taking the place of Judas and the other 11 voting for Mathias, only to never be heard of again in the scriptures.

Besides the original 12 --

-- Matthias, Acts 1.

-- Paul, Acts 14:14

-- Barnabas, Acts 14:14

-- Andronicus, Rom. 16:7

-- Junia, Rom. 16:7

Maybe Timothy and Silas/Silvanus, since they are several times mentioned together with Paul, even as authors of some epistles.

I've seen longer lists -- 23 or so -- but IIRC, their "proof-texts" were a bit loose.

Probably. The "traditional" view is that "apostles" and "prophets" were "foundational" gifts (Eph. 2:20), and so passed away in the First Century, once the writing of the NT was complete. Traditionally, all the "showy" gifts, such as healings and miracles, passed away with them.

I of course disagree.

Actually, they are going even further: They are saying that to qualify as an Apostle, one must have actually *met* Jesus.

I disagree. All the other offices of Eph 4:11 are for the church today, so this one is also.

Yes, they are wrong for making that an absolute requirement. The Eleven set that as a requirement for "restocking" their number with Matthias. Paul also satisfied the requirement -- sort of. But there is no evidence that Barnabas or any of the others listed in the NT did so.

Meanwhile, 1 Cor. 12-13 and Eph. 4 pretty clearly suggest that ALL the gifts will remain until the Body reaches maturity, completeness, and unity.

The apostles I know have a servant's heart.

These are some scriptures that reflect apostles' responsibilities -

for today:

1. Taking the gospel to unreached areas such as Rom. 15:20, NIV).

2. Plant churches such as 1Co 3::10

3. Help with problems such as Gal 1:7,

4. Appointing and training the initial leaders of a church. (Acts 14:21-23 -Titus 1:5).

5. Promoting unity in the body of Christ (see Eph. 4:1-16).

6. Signs and wonders such as Mark 16:14-20 (this scriptural reference was changed after originally posted to include "the eleven"; 2 Cor. 12:12 - "Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds."

I had posted these on another forum and was advised that Barnabas didn't plant any churches; therefore, that shouldn't be added to the list. To me, he traveled with other apostles such as Acts 13:2, 7 and 14:4; so he planted churches.

Hi Deba,

Yes, there are apostles (small 'a') active in the church today.

There are teachings buzzing around that there were only the original Apostles. These teachings are not that much different from those who say the gifts, or prophets, were only for the first century church.

My view from scripture and experience is this:
A modern apostle does not appoint himself, but is appointed by the church. He is like a father to other leaders in the church; a leader to the leaders. So many of his gifts would be similar to that of a pastor; but he'd generally be older, wiser, more experienced and has to be called by God into this ministry.

I've met a few of these, 'true' apostles, and they are humble men of God with great giftedness who are looked up to and sought out by leaders in the church.

I hope this helps.

By the way, I read your brief testimony and I'm struck that you are a SUCCESSFUL Christian. Your obedience to our Father, whatever the cost, is what success really is.

God bless you.
Simon

The period of time we can expect to see the Apostle is defined in Eph 4.
The word "until" is key:

Ephesians 4:11-16
11 And it is he who gifted some to be apostles, others to be prophets, others to be evangelists, and still others to be pastors and teachers,
12 to perfect the saints, to do the work of ministry, and to build up the body of Christ
13 until all of us are united in the faith and in the full knowledge of God's Son, and until we attain mature adulthood and the full standard of development in Christ.
14 Then we will no longer be little children, tossed like waves and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people's trickery, or by clever strategies that would lead us astray.
15 Instead, by speaking the truth in love, we will grow up completely into the one who is the head, that is, into Christ,
16 in whom the whole body is united and held together by every ligament with which it is supplied. As each individual part does its job, the body's growth is promoted so that it builds itself up in love.

Therefore we can see that until these things are accomplished in the church, we can expect to see Apostles and the rest. As we speak there are many apostles and prophets pumping gas, working normal jobs unaware that the have this calling on their lives. They are aware that something is happening in them. They have dreams, maybe even visions... as these are signs that accompany the apostle and prophet. But they just do not know what to do with all this. Unless they "stir up the gift" that exists within them... it more or less will stay dormant and inactive. This is not just the case for apostles and prophets... but for all believers. We have all been placed in the body of Christ. We all have be given gifts for the profit of all. Yet they will remain inactive until we let love move us, let knowledge guide us, and let faith activate these things that are resident in us.

Apostles do plant church and many are also evangelists.

For anyone who believes in apostles today, what is opinion on post #13? Mark 16:17 is the only verse that I could find that stated "apostles" in the text with responsibilities/roles/evidence. Do you know of another?

Actually, I think the 2 Cor. citation is the only one that counts. Mark 16:17 specifically refers to "those who believe," not "apostles."

Even the 2 Cor. reference is hardly definitive, because many other passages show that "signs, wonders, and mighty deeds" do not belong to ONLY apostles. (Maybe they are more numerous and dramatic in apostolic ministries?)

Since Judas was one of the original 12 Apostles, and since Acts 1:20 refers to his "office" by means of the word episkopos, there *might* be *some* connection between "apostle" and "bishop/overseer."

My rule of thumb for “apostles” are those who, like Paul and the other apostles we read about in the NT, lay the foundation of the Kingdom of God.
“18 For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ has not accomplished through me, in word and deed, to make the Gentiles obedient— 19 in mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem and round about to Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. 20 And so I have made it my aim to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build on another man’s foundation” (Romans 15).
Apostles are those who lay the “foundation” in cultures and people groups, who go into a region to preach for the first time the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to establish communities of believers there. They are “missionaries” in the most basic sense of the word.
