Sadly when an astronomer sees a new astroid, they tend to open their mouths because it is a pretty cool discovery, and the media always spins it as "WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE" because that generates clicks, and while the media generally gets corrected, it only reports its correction on page 3. In the meantime, people only remember the dying part and base their entire mental framework around it, reading every correction as the government surpressing information and any fringe cook as someone "in the know", just as long as their initial bias gets supported.

That's exactly how it works.

A friendly acquaintance of mine was talking last night tha an asteroid named Apophis is due to hit Earth in 2029. She claims NASA knows and is covering up so there’s no panic. I read about asteroids and experts say this one won’t hit Earth and we are unlikely to be struck within the next 100 years.
They did also say that eventually one will hit Earth.......would that be the end of the world or just devastation for the location it strikes?

What about the foretold wormwood in the book of revelation?

The millstone cast into the sea would be like Apophis, preceding the proximity of a literal [dwarf/dark] star wormwood that will come upon, not impact , the earth. The hail mingled with blood is the meteor shower that precedes, and happens during both events.

These events have happened before in history. Apophis is associated with darkness, earthquakes, storms, etc - what you would expect from, say, a dark/dwarf star close enough to influence the planet (dislodging large enough space debris into the earth).

Conspiracy theories in general are a symptom of the human mind striving for internal consistency while not being willing to change its frame of reference.
Wow. That is arguably the best combination of projection and mis-information I've ever seen.
It is the very frame of reference that conspiracy theory exposes and seeks to change I favor of truth while anti - conspiracists in general strive for continuity to preserve their indoctrination.
"I'm from The Government so EVEYTHING IS GOING TO BE OK " is initial bias on 'peer reviewed' steroids by any establishment zombie pining for false security.

Are you also out of the worldwide coldsnap and famine zone?
Pretty much. I've got lots of firewood, live by a stream, got the legal 90 days anti-hoarding limit of dry & canned goods. How you sittin' for temporary disruptions?

Federal Anti-Hoarding Law

  • In 1994, former President Bill Clinton released an executive order that lumped together a number of laws that could go into effect in the event of a declaration of martial law. One of the laws included in this order, number 10998, allows the federal government to sieze hoarded food supplies from both public and private sources.
Considerations
  • Some people may feel the federal government does not have the right to confiscate stored food in the event of a national emergency where access to food is limited. They believe the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution -- which prohibits unreasonable search and seizure -- protects their privacy and should be upheld to protect their food supplies even if other people do not have access to food in a disaster.
Debates
  • Federal anti-hoarding laws may not be as controversial an issue as abortion or gay marriage, but it has bee known to strike a nerve. People who store food and supplies to sustain themselves for extended periods of time in case of a serious emergency or disaster don't want to give these provisions away. They take serious issues with executive orders that, in essence, force them to give away the stores they took so much time and effort to create. On the other hand, others feel if food supplies were cut off in a cataclysmic event, those who could not otherwise stockpile food and supplies would be unjustly left to die.

    ..................................................................................................................................

"Unjustly"? Unmercifully perhaps, but certainly not "unjustly".

With all due respect... are we overlooking my question thoughtlessly or for a reason?
"How you sittin' for temporary disruptions? "

...Or should it be obvious by now that you regard conspiracy theory as fringe kookiness?

I'm doing fine. Besides, I'm living in a place that is pretty low risk concerning earthquakes, heavy storms or flooding.

This is interesting because this "very thing" was discussed on Jim Bakker Show by his guest speaker, Tom Horn (notable prophesy teacher). He was possibly on Bakker's program for 3 days. I did watch one that was DVR-ed and I may have one other one to watch.

Good thread...

That depends on the size, the velocity and the location it strikes, as well as the angle and a lot of other factors.

The chance of it hitting was at about 3% at its highest, but later corrected down and finally discounted.

If apophis would hit, it wouldn't be the end of the world. It's energy of impact would be about 900 megatons of TNT or a few dozen nuclear warheads. It would neccessitate an evacuation of several hundred kilometers around the impact site and might cause some changed weather phenomena for a few years, but nothing that could seriously threaten mankind, especially with enough warning. There's no reason to keep it secret because even if you were at the point of impact right now, you could continue your life for the next few years and then calmly relocate somewhere else. Hardly a reason for panic.

Thanks!

yeah, well I think she’s a conspiracy theorist who’s into prophesy. She said something about it once.

There, you might find actual people who have studied astronomy or physics. Over here, you get people who google and their aunt marthas mailing list.

One of my bass players teaches astronomy at the local university.
He sounds like Frank Zappa when he sings.
