  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Im currently attending an Aog church. It seems we have the same policy as other Aog churches.

Like many have observed with the Aog, the services are run in orderly fashion and the congregation are generally more reserved.

Speaking in tongues(openly) in the assemblies requires it to be followed by interpretation by another person. Otherwise they will be approached and corrected by the pastor. When someone speaks in tongues, the Pastor always approaches the pulpit and explain it(in layman terms) to first time visitors.

Here is a Reddit AMA from an Aog Pastor. It seems they enforce their service to be orderly.

“For us at our church expression of spontaneous spiritual gifts such as tongues or prophecy isn't a part of a normal Sunday service. We lean more towards the words of Paul that our service be decent and in order. One of my critiques of my movement is that many of our services look like the Corinthian church and Paul wrote 1st Corinthians to stop that nonsense.

Expression of gifts is intended to support the Mission of Jesus and should be used that way. In our context that means a lot of the stuff that would freak out unbelievers and would require explanation and discipleship in their use are best done in small groups where discernment and discipleship can take place.”

Does that help?”

“A tongue and interpretation will come maybe in one service in a month, on average.

If the tongue is not followed by an interpretation (it has happened) then the pastor will correct the person, as it was clearly either not from God or it just wasn't for the whole congregation.

Discipline and order is so important in our lives and churches.

I think we can give someone a passif the speaker in tongues speaks in tongues, sees there is no interpreter, and is silent. Doesn't that fit with I Corinthians 14:27-28?

If he means only someone else, not the speaker, can interpret the tongue, I'd disagree. Two verses in I Corinthians 14 mention the speaker in tongues interpreting. So that's definitely an option, too. It doesn't have to be someone else.

I think he's reading a false dichotomy here into scripture.

Not allowing the functioning of the gift of prophecy according to 'the commandments of the Lord' in I Corinthians 14 by saying people can't prophecy would be going against 'Let everything be done decently and in order' wouldn't it?

If you aren't letting everyting be done, how can you say you are letting everything be done decently and in order?

There is a command there: let the prophets speak two or three and let the other judge. If you don't let the prophets speak two or three, then you aren't following the command.

Who are we to make up our own rules when the Lord has given us some? There isn't that much in the Bible on what to do in church. This is the longest passage. The order of the service allows for prophesying, tongues and interpretation, etc.

The BIble never says anything specific about pastors speaking in church, nothing about a 45 minute Sunday sermon. It speaks of 'every one of you' having a psalm, doctrine, tongue, revelation, or interpretation. Those with the gift of pastor are included in 'every one of you.'

Pastors should be encouraging believers to obey the teachings of the New Testament. The New Testament commands believers to minister their gifts one to another and to edify one another. It does not command pastors to hog the floor or to preach 45 minute sermons and to make sure everyone else is quiet so they can do that.
