Stupid title but it’s the way I feel. Got a letter to appear for jury duty. I have a full calendar as it is with caretaking for both our mothers. Doctors are calling me daily, etc. Plus we must take care of our obligations. There is an option to call the Friday before to excuse yourself. I’ve already sent 2 letters. Please pray I get a pass on this. I’m not kidding there is something every day this month. Yes I know serving jury duty is a privilege, etc. but I am just overwhelmed with all the servitude lately. I know. I sound awful. Please pray of you think about it.

I served on one jury and was left unselected for another and a third settled out of court before trial. I get it they need jurors who are a true cross section of the community. But it’s inconvenient and not very fulfilling. In the one trial I felt we had to let go someone guilt as sin because the prosecutor’s case flopped. I wanted to shout ‘guilty’ but the case just wasn’t made right.

I think they will figure out that you really are needed elsewhere.

Michie, there is absolutely nothing wrong with being excused from jury duty, especially for someone in your situation. You're in a position where you simply can't serve on a jury---you're a full-time care provider.

I only served once on jury duty, and it was years ago....I was unemployed at the time, so it was no big deal for me. It was an interesting experience, all in all, but nothing to write home to mother about. The one trial I sat through was a drug possession/B&E charge; we voted the guy guilty, as I recall. The next pool I was assigned to was an attempted murder charge---domestic abuse; the male had beaten the woman with an electric power saw and shattered her skull; they found brain matter in the woman's throat. :( I wasn't picked for the trial on that one, and I was glad, because I definitely did not want to sit through that. Shortly thereafter, my time ran out, and that was that.

I was sent a letter a few years ago for jury duty, but I sent them an explanatory letter back with copies of my disability awards from the VA and Social Security; basically said that I was not physically or psychologically able to serve on a jury pool, and they did not call me back. :)

My dad was called once, when I was a kid. Being self-employed, it would have been a real financial hit for him to sit through a long trial. My mom asked what he was going to do, and he said, "Don't worry about it, I'll take care of it." He went to the courthouse on the assigned day, and within two hours, he was back. Mom asked what happened, and he grinned. Apparently the judge had reviewed the prospective pool, and when he came to Dad, asked about his background---Pacific veteran, certified craftsman, small business owner, etc., and then asked him, "Well, sir, do you think you can be a fair and impartial juror?", and Dad replied, "Judge, if the prisoner is a Jap, I say hang him."

They excused him from jury duty. ^_^

Oh my goodness ... and jury duty now, too?? :swoon:

Caregiving has got to be a very justifiable reason to be excused. I think anyone's whose done it, will agree.

Most caregivers are already operating at 'the nearly exhausted line' and could never afford to pay for someone to come in and cover for them.

How soon before you are suppose to serve?

(I'll be praying, too, that you get excused.)

:)

Thank you! I’m going to call them tomorrow. My fear is it’s this gory case here where two young girls were killed several years ago on top of everything else. It just really exasperated me last night. I opened my mail late and got that surprise. The thing is, I just filled out a form asking to be excused because of the reasons I’ve given here. They want me to report there September 30, 8:15 AM. Ugh!

Jury duty is one of those things a person knows they should do, but dread getting the summons, which always comes out of the blue at seemingly the worst time. I've been called three or four times for everything from drunk driving to federal cases but have never been chosen. Hopefully I'm not jinxing myself!

Where I live, being the primary caregiver of someone who can't take care of themselves is an excuse if sworn to in front of a judge. Don't know about where you are but you might check the jury excuses for your state.

Last time I was called, about two years ago, there were 300 prospective jurors for various types of cases. At least half headed to the officials when people were told to present excuses to not serve. It really is hard on many people.

Best wishes. Hopefully it gets done quickly.

I was told because hypoglycemia I wouldn't have to, but got a summons when I lived in another county but it wasn't my county.
The left doesn't know what the right one is doing, for sure.

I'm worried I'm going to jinx myself (sorry, I know that's not a Christian term) but I don't know how I can serve jury duty with the sleep issues I have (never been summoned). I can't be at the county courthouse at fking 9 in the morning especially since it requires going on the highway.

Lol ... so ...........
I guess maybe I 'jinxed' myself, by reading and responding in this thread!!!!!!! ^_^

Guess who got a summons today, to serve on jury duty in November???
You got it ... ME!!!!

LOL ... it's so funny. I had the very same thought as you two, about being 'jinxed' after this discussion here.
Of course, I don't really believe in 'jinxing', but honestly, the thought did cross my mind! Lol
(Normally, 'jury duty' are just two words I.keep.out.of.my.thoughts!!)

Well, this isn't a prayer request to 'not' serve. Somebody's gotta do it, and I have no legitimate excuse.
But gee, I do wish it wasn't the week of the election!!!

(Who knows what might be going on in the Country that week, and there I'll be, trotting off to mandatory jury duty!!!)

... Life these days sure in interesting. But God is still in control.

I'm sorry you have so much on your plate, Mich.

But, ftr:

If I was on trial I'd want you on a jury of my peers.

Just sayin'
Michie is a Saintly woman, after all! :D
