I found some birthday money I got last year and since my birthday is in two more weeks I decided to go out and spend it to clear up last years stuff.
The big choice was between Bioshock for the 360 and MP3 for my Wii.
I had played the Bioshock demo and thought it looked great and had solid controls to it, however, I am kind of tired of FPS games where I have to run around in dark confined spaces and was concerned about the gore level as my son likes to watch me play so I would have to restrict my playing until he was in bed.
So I took a chance on MP3 and am glad that I did. The Wii remote and nunchuk (you need the nunchuk to play MP3) is easily the best FPS controller outside of the mouse/keyboard combination and is surprisingly easy to aim accurately with.
I have only finished off the first two bosses but so far there is much more action and less puzzles than previous versions of MP (there are still puzzles though).
You start off fighting space pirates and keep fighting them on a frequent basis as opposed to fighting wasps or something else. There are certainly other baddies around, but pirates have so far made up the bulk of the fights.
You get a grappling hook early on and to use it you need to flick the nunchuk controller forward, like you are casting a fishing line, to extend it and then yank it back to retract it. It is pretty cool when you are fighting space pirates and they pull out shields to block your shots, fire the hook and pull back to rip them away, then shoot the pirate dead.
Throwing out the hook and ripping the shield off with your left hand and then using the controller in your right hand to blast the pirate adds tremendously to the immersion level.
The graphics are good, for the Wii at least, though they are the typical Metroid style, so it isn't like we are talking Bioshock quality water here. With the first boss you could notice the difference between the Wii and 360's graphics power and, after playing next gen games for most of the year, it is a noticeable difference.
One other issue that bothers me is the loading times. MP3 kind of loads as you go along and hides the fact that it is doing that. What happens is you shoot the shield off a door and walk towards it to open it, however, this is when the Wii loads what is behind the door and it won' t open until it is done.
The game doesn't stop during the loading and this results in you thinking "do I need to do something else to get this door open", because sometimes it takes several seconds.
IMO, MP3 is the second "A" title for the Wii (Zelda being the other) and it does not disappoint. However, if I haven't beaten the game by September 25, I am not sure that I ever will.
If you don't know the significance of September 25, then you obviously don't own a 360...or you live under a rock or something.
