• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. I really need to know. I have been on this medication for 3 weeks now and I'm beginning to see some results in mood changes, but I'm afraid of weight gain.

Please, can anyone tell me?

Thank you.

Hello:wave:

I took Lithium 300mgs twice daily for about 3 yrs and I didn't gain weight.

I did have increased water intake as in I was always thirsty, but no weight gain. I'm still always thirsty though but that's a great feeling:p I drink alot of water.

And Lithium worked very well for me. I had drowsiness and confusion for a couple weeks at first but it leveled out and it felt fine.

In terms of the effects on blood/liver and thyroid, my test results showed that I had very little in my system and my thyroid function was normal...I'm still Thanking God and rejoicing about that because I was worried.

Eat well, stay healthy and be positive and above all, pray and stay close to God...the best things I could do for myself. And eventually I got off Lithium and I have been doing welll.

That's great! I have to admit that I worry about it a lot. Not just for vanity, but also for health, because I also had a small stroke a few years ago, so it's esential that I keep on losing weight.

I'm still so emotional about everything and I cry at the drop of a hat

This is so exhausting...:sigh:

Thank you...

I was on it and did not gain weight. Just be sure not to drink calorie rich foods if it makes you thirsty and see what happens.

Blessings!
 Thanks for your reply. That's really encouraging.

I hope and pray this medication works, and I'll trust in God that it will. :amen:

I have been taking Lithium for over three years I take 1500 mg a day and I did increase my weight somewhat - nothing like I did when they put me on anti-psychotic medications though. (22 kilo.)

Thanks again for all your responses!

My dosage has been adjusted to 900mg/day and my moods are stabilizing with no noticeable weight gain.

My doctor had put me on several anti-psychotic meds in the past with no results (only bad side-effects) and anti-depressants didn't work either.

This however, is working quiet well! :)

Hi all,

My husband is currently on 900mg per day of lithium and hes been on that dosage for almost 3 weeks, but hes been "down" the past few days and I haven't noticed too much of a difference. does anyone know with this med if the dosages will make a big difference? For example, if the doc were to increase it to 1200mg, is it possible for that to make a difference even though 900mg didn't do much? Any info would be great.

I have been on Lithium for a long time now and I did gain a small amount of weight but, once you gain it, it stops. So, it really is worth the small weight gain! And this is coming from a person who was a size 1 and now a size 5 which my husband and everybody else seems to like better. So, Keep going!! It really does help

Well,

Since I've started taking it I've lost a few pounds (being VERY careful), but the mood swings are still quite frequent.

The depression is still there though not as crushing. I am remaining cautiously optimistic.

Thank you all so much for your responses!

My doctor increased my dosage to 900mg a day on Monday after receiving my lithium blood results (0.44). Today he called and said to up it again to 1200mg a day!

I am a little worried...and I am considering calling him and telling him I am having second thoughts. BTW I weigh 98pds...which is why I am so concerned!

Any ideas? :sorry:

LOL! what are you concerned about?

Gaining weight  ? Or having your dosage increased?

I have a feeling my dosage has to be increased, because my moods swings are too frequent and it's exhausting me mentally and physically.
